Social Conventions

The people of Thailand are famously easy-going way of life and are incredibly polite. The wai is the usual greeting and it involves hands being placed together as if in prayer and then raised upwards toward the face while the head is lowered in a slight bow. The higher the hands, the more respect is being shown. Thai people tend to dress conservatively, so revealing clothing is not usually considered appropriate. When visiting temples or other sacred sites, arms and legs should be covered. Shoes are also taken off before entering temples or homes.

To the people of Thailand, the head is the most sacred part of the body and as such should not be touched. In contrast, the feet are the least sacred part of the body and should never be pointed at someone. When sitting on the floor, most Thais tuck their feet below them.

Language

While Thai is the official language of Thailand, many people in tourist regions speak and understand English.

Religion

Theravada Buddhism is the most popular religion in Thailand (it is also the official religion) with approximately 95% of the population following it. Islam is represented by approximately 4% of the population, while religions like Hinduism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Christianity are generally only found in Bangkok.
