Classic Northern Italy: Milan, Venice, Florence

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 3,497

This Northern Italy tour focuses on Milan, picture perfect Venice and the romantic splendour of Florence, taking in the most famous aspects of each city, alongside some local secrets.

This 10-day trip through Italy immerses you in the country’s modern powerhouse, Milan, then goes on to two of its most iconic cities, Venice and Florence.

If you are an independent traveller and prefer not to be with a group and would like to avoid the trouble of not only researching and planning your trip but also making the necessary reservations, why not let Goway be of assistance with this fully independent itinerary. Utilizing local airlines and transportation, this trip is a recommended and proven itinerary.

Though it lacks the flashy, postcard appeal of some Italian cities, progressive Milan still has its charms, which you’ll discover on a walking tour that takes you to Teatro alla Scala, and through the Duomo, perhaps the most striking Gothic cathedral in Italy. Admittedly, it’s not the most walkable city, but a panoramic bus tour will help you along. It also takes you to the Santa Maria delle Grazie Basillica, where you’ll skip the line to see Da Vinci’s famous ‘The Last Supper.’ The following day, get out of the city and explore Lake Como, on the edge of Alpine Italy. Enjoy a panoramic cruise and some time exploring the namesake town, as well as the charming village of Bellagio.

Travel to Venice, the unmistakeable canal city where a tour takes you to key sights such as the Corte del Milion, the Rialto Bridge, San Giacometto church, and the bustling Rialto market. Of course, no visit to Venice is complete without a ride in a gondola. Though most passengers today are tourists, this remains a peerless way to experience all the unique beauty of Venice. The following day, visit Murano, including a stop at one of its renowned glass factories. You’ll also stop at the colourful fishing island of Burano, and Torcello, the oldest settlement in the area. Return to Venice for one more night. Many of Venice’s tourists actually stay on the mainland, so by staying in the city itself, you’ll enjoy a much less crowded, more intimate side of Venice in the evenings.

Arrive in Florence, where you’ll uncover the legacy of the Renaissance for yourself. A city tour takes you to the Piazzale Michelangelo for a magnificent city view. This is followed by the Academy Gallery, finally ending at the Square of the Duomo, where you can learn about Giotto’s Bell Tower. Then explore Florence by night with a delicious Tuscan dinner included. You’ll visit Il Salotto di Firenze, Ponte Vecchio, and other parts of the city that come alive after dark, showing Florence at its most romantic. Of course, there’s more to Tuscany than the city, and your last full day on tour is a chance to get out into the fresh air and explore the Tuscan countryside. Journey through olive groves and vineyards, visiting castles and estates. Afterwards, return to Florence for your departure, or stay an extra few days in this historic centre for art and cuisine.

Grand Tour Of Milan

Guarantee your visit to see one of the most famous works of art in the world, Leonardo da Vinci's 'The Last Supper'. Reservations to see this legendary painting are limited and sell out quickly, sometimes months in advance. Choose this best-selling tour and be guaranteed advance booking and "skip the line" tickets. Plus you'll take a half-day tour of the impressive city of Milan. But there is plenty more to Milan than just Leonardo's masterpiece! Your half-day sightseeing tour of Milan also includes a walking tour, introducing you to Italy's most stylish city. Take a look at the medieval Sforza Castle. A grand medieval Castle and fortress, the Sforzesco was once residence for the ruling family of Milan and now houses several of the city's museums and art collections. Visit the splendid Duomo, one of the world's largest, most striking Gothic cathedrals. Some 135 spires and 3,200 statues are crammed onto the roof and facade of the building. Walk inside Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping gallery, a 19th century glass vaulted shopping arcade. Brimming with fashionable shops and cafes, it is often called the "salotto di Milano' or 'Milan's drawing room' for its importance over the years as a common meeting point for the people of Milan. Enter Milan's most famous Opera House, the fabulous La Scala theatre. Founded in 1778 and still in use, some of the world's greatest musicians and opera singers have performed here including Pavarotti and Giuseppe Verdi, whose famous operas such as Falstaff often premiered in this very theatre. Your entrance ticket provides 24 hour admission to the theatre and museum so you can return the next day. Finally the tour ends with the view of Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece, The Last Supper, a UNESCO World Heritage site, housed at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. The delicate nature of this mural and its importance means that Last Supper tickets are strictly limited to those who have pre-booked. This Skip the Line Tour of the Best of Milan includes this difficult to obtain pre-booked entrance, guaranteeing exclusive no line entry and an intimate viewing of the Last Supper.

Rialto, Market and Merchants

From Campo San Bartolomeo (St Bartholemew's Square) we walk to the ancient houses of the Corte del Milion. The Malibran Theatre stands were archaeologists think was the house of Marco Polo. Then we cross the Rialto Bridge to visit the commercial heart of Venice: the Banco Giro (which has given its name, the 'giro', to a particular sort of cheque in Britain), the old church of San Giacometto and the leaning facades of Palazzo dei Camerlenghi. Al last we will mingle with the crowd of Venetians shopping in the lively fruit and vegetable and fish market of the Rialto. The colours of the fruit, the variety of the fish from the Adriatic and the fragrance from a florist shop stuck amongst the stalls make the visit something not to be missed; the sight of what was, and still is, the very heart of the city. The tour might end in the Campo Santa Sofia, after crossing the Grand Canal with the traditional Gondola ferry.

Duration3 Hours

Private Gondola Ride Day (Summer)

Today, sit back, relax and admire the views during an exciting, traditional Venetian Gondola ride.
After boarding your gondola, your fully licensed Gondolier will navigate your vessel through the narrow canals and beneath the many stone bridges of Venice during a serene, half-hour gondola ride. Gently guide on this traditional means of aquatic travel along the Venetian Grand Canal, passing the many landmarks and sites that have made Venice a global tourist hub. A quintessential Venetian experience!

After sailing past the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, the Public Gardens, the tip of Sant' Elena and the famous Lido beach resort, the boat arrives in Murano, known throughout the world for its glass manufacturing industry. Here you stop for around 40 minutes to visit to one of the factories. The second stop is at the picturesque island of Burano, famous not only for its lace but also for the fishermen's houses painted in bright colours. The stop will last about 30 minutes. Then after a short cruise, you reach Torcello, the earliest centre of civilization in the estuary. Only the Cathedral with its magnificent mosaics and the church of Santa Fosca remain as testimony of its former glory. The stop will be for about 30 minutes before returning to St.Mark's Square.
