Food
The cuisine of Macau relies heavily on its colonial past with both Portugal and China. Food in Macau is often seen as fusion cooking because many dishes blend flavours from different cultures including Europe, Latin America, Africa, India and Southeast Asia as well as local ingredients.
Popular dishes include:
Galinha à Portuguesa: Portuguese-styled chicken which includes pieces of chicken and potato (sometimes boiled rice) that is then baked in a mild coconut-based sauce.
Bacalhau: this is baked, grilled or stewed cod. Portuguese in origin, it is believed that there are over 1,000 recipes to cook bacalhau in Portugal alone.
Minchee: this involves minced or ground meat (beef or pork) that has been flavoured with soy sauce and molasses. It can be served with a fried egg on top which is known as Minchee chew dan.
Drink
Coffee shops are very popular in Macau and there is a great selection that serve Portuguese, Italian and American blends. Portuguese wine, red or white, is also readily available.
Things to Know:
A 10% service charge is added to most restaurant and hotel bills, however, a small tip is often appreciated.
