Macau Travel Information
With an interesting mix of European and Chinese cultures, Macau is located 60 km southwest of Hong Kong. It’s comprised of the Macau Peninsula and the islands of Taipa and Coloane, which are now connected by a landfill forming the Cotai Strip.
Continuously developing, the Cotai Strip consists mostly of newly built casinos. Macau is booming as Asia’s gambling mecca, and Chinese tourists flock to this region as gambling is illegal in mainland China. Casinos can also be found along the waterfront, on the south side of the Macau Peninsula.
Once a Portuguese colony until the handover in 1999, Macau is one of two ‘special administrative regions of China (the other being Hong Kong). Its Mediterranean influence can be seen everywhere as Portuguese traders started settling and administering Macau in the 16th century.
Along with casinos, Macau features European-style streets, churches, fortresses, and food. With most of the population being of Chinese descent, the integration of the two cultures is seamless.
Standing tall at 338 metres, Macau Tower offers scenic views from its observation deck, as well as restaurants and theatres. Adventure seekers can try Skywalk X, a thrilling walk along the tower’s outer rim, and also a tethered skyjump.
With its old European-style architecture, world-class museums, beautiful gardens, and of course the many developing casinos, Macau is fast becoming a notable tourist destination.
