Korea - Culture
There are many traditional customs that are still followed to this day in Korea. Gift giving is considered polite, but gifts in multiples of four should be avoided as the number four is considered bad luck. Seven, however, is believed to be very lucky. People should always remove shoes before entering a house and when dining, guests should wait to be told where to sit. The oldest or most senior person at the table is always served first. When eating with chopsticks, the chopsticks should be returned to the table after every few bites and when a person goes to drink or speak.
The predominant religion in Korea is Buddhism but there is also a large Christian population also. This Christian population is made up of Catholics and Protestants of various denominations. A large percentage of the population has no religion.
Korean is the official language while English is taught in schools and is generally understood in major cities.
