South Korea inhabits the southern half of the mountainous Korean Peninsula and shares its only border with North Korea, the population stands at 51,141,000 people.

The geography of South Korea can be divided into four general regions:

Eastern Region: this region is characterized by high mountain ranges and coastal plains.

Western Region: this region is made up of coastal plains, river basins and hills.

Southwestern Region: this region is made up of mountains and valleys.

Southeastern Region: this region is dominated by the broad basin of the Nakdong River.

The three major mountain ranges in South Korea are the Taebaek Mountains, the Sobaek Range and the Jiri Massif. Despite having many mountains, there are no active volcanoes in South Korea and there have been no strong earthquakes.

South Korea also encompasses 3,000 islands which are predominantly small and uninhabited. The largest island is Jeju which is the site of South Korea’s highest point, Hallasan. Hallasan is an extinct volcano that reaches 1,950m (6,398ft).

After the Second World War and the Korean War, much of the remaining Korean forests were cut down. However, since the 1970s, comprehensive reforestation projects have been underway and forest cover reached its peak in 1980 at 65% as opposed to only 35% in 1945.
