When visiting Mozambique it is important to remember that taking photos of public buildings is prohibited by law. When taking photos of people, it is best to ask for permission first. Shaking hands is the most common form of greeting. Much of the population is Muslim so Islamic customs should be respected. Bathing suits should only be worn at the beach or in resort areas and topless or nude sunbathing or swimming is not permitted.
Portuguese is the official language of Mozambique. English is spoken in major cities as the language of business. African languages such as Tsonga, Sena Nyanja, Makonde and Macua are also spoken.
Christian denominations like Catholicism and Protestantism are represented in Mozambique, so too are Islam and Hinduism. Parts of the population also observe traditional beliefs.
