Named after a local tribal chief Gamala Vilankulo Mukoke, Vilanculos is a coastal town found in the Inhambane Province of Mozambique. Vilanculos serves as the country’s water sports capital and is the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique’s only underwater national park.
A history of trading can be traced back as far as the 14th century in Vilanculos when Arab traders came to the area while transporting gold, ivory and slaves to other islands. In later centuries when rumours of pearls in the waters around Vilanculos began to circulate, Portuguese explorers began to arrive and establish settlements.
Today Vilanculoson travel to Mozambique is one of the country's foremost tourist destinations and has grown in recent years as a result of heavy investment into the area’s tourist industry. It offers an interesting blend of old and new, maintaining its rural past while incorporating well-equipped tourist facilities. The Bazaruto Archipelago, made up of five islands, is easily accessible by traditional dhow boats.
