Slovenia is a small country tucked in between Italy to the west, Austria to the north, Croatia to the south and southeast and Hungary to the northeast. Although it may not be such a large land mass, this does not mean it lacks reasons to visit on a Slovenia vacation. Just the opposite is true. A good half of the country is covered in forest, the northern part of the country includes the Alps mountain range and another part is devoted to the Adriatic coastline, some 46 kilometres/29 miles in length.

Slovenia has been an independent democratic republic since it separated from Yugoslavia in 1991. It is also part of the Eurozone. The official language is Slovene although a number of other languages are spoken.

It has 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites that can be visited on a Slovenia vacation namely the Skocjan Caves, the Idrija Mercury mining site and the Ljubljana Marshes. The capital, Ljubljana has been likened to Salzburg in Austria due to its charming Baroque architecture found in the city centre. It is dominated by the medieval Ljubljana Castle which sits on a hill immediately overlooking the city. Other major attractions are the river which cuts through the centre with several interesting ornate and unusual bridges connecting the two banks. The remains of the Roman city, Emona were found here and many relics are on display in a local museum. There is a charming Opera house with regular performances, several excellent museums and art galleries, and a City Museum. Maribor is Slovenia’s second-largest city and is in the centre of the country’s wine-producing region. Incidentally, Slovenia produces some excellent wines.

Two outstanding attractions which draw many visitors on a Slovenia vacation are the Skocjan and Postojna Caves with their extensive amazing underground limestone caverns. The latter offers an intriguing 5-kilometre/3-mile train ride well into the cave.

On the Adriatic coast, the best-known resort is Piran, a charming picture postcard-perfect town rich in history and culture. Lake Bled, a vacation paradise, is sheltered by a mountain backdrop and ideal for a relaxing stay. Triglav National Park is located in the Julian Alps and is home to beautiful gorges and gushing waterfalls.
