Ljubljana Tours and Vacation Packages

  • The center of the old town - always a popular spot to visit on Slovenia tours.
  • Streets and skyline
  • The famous Dragon Bridge
  • Scenic canals

The capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana has been likened to Salzburg in Austria due to its charming mix of architectural styles found in the city centre. The historic centre, with its baroque-style architecture, remains intact. Ljubljana is dissected by the charming Ljubljanica River whose banks are located in a number of restaurants, cafes, bars and boutique stores. On a pleasant day, the outdoor cafes are busy with locals and visitors on a Slovenia vacation alike. The streets behind the river banks are often cobblestoned and have an architectural design emanating from medieval times. There you will find interesting shops plus a good selection of restaurants and cafes. An excellent way to discover the delights of Ljubljana is to take a short river cruise which departs at regular intervals. On this cruise, you will see attractive ornate and unusual bridges of which the principal ones are the Triple Bridge, Dragon’s Bridge, Cobbler’s Bridge and Butcher’s Bridge, each with its own individual character.

The city is dominated by the medieval Ljubljana Castle which sits on a hill immediately overlooking the city. This castle complex was once a medieval fortress dating back to the 11th Century although most of the architecture now dates back to the 16th and 17th Centuries. It is now a cultural venue with 2 restaurants.

Within easy walking distance from the river is Tivoli Park, a large pretty recreational area with many trails and wooded areas. There are flower gardens, statues and fountains dotted around the park. It houses Tivoli Castle, a 17th Century mansion and the Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia.

The very heart of the city is Preseren Square in which the imposing gothic-style Town Hall is located as well as Ljubljana Cathedral with its green dome and twin towers.

The 13-storey Neboticnik building stands out with its combination of neo-classical and art deco architecture. It contains shops, offices and an observation tower.

Ljubljana has a number of cultural institutions to visit on a Slovenia vacation. An interesting one is the Ljubljana City Museum featuring the remains of the Roman city, Emona which were found here and many relics are on display. The National Gallery features many works by the Masters. There are also the Museum of Modern art and the Museum of Contemporary Art plus the Ethnographic Museum, all worth visiting. The Imposing National Opera and Ballet Theatre offers an assortment of musical entertainment.

There is a flea market every Sunday near Cobbler’s Bridge. The Metalkova neighbourhood is an interesting self-claimed autonomous area (a type of tolerated squat with unusual graffiti and buildings).
