Overview

Take a trip to Liwonde National Park on your Malawi Vacation

Liwonde National Park, located on the upper Shire River, 160 kilometres/100 miles north of Blantyre, is Malawi’s premier wildlife reserve and has a lot to offer. Because of its almost non-existing number of dangerous predators, it is one of the few wildlife national parks that offer game walks as an alternative to the more common game drive. There are also canoe and boat safaris on a Malawi vacation.

On a Malawi safari vacation, wildlife in Liwonde National Park is abundant, especially with around 900 elephants and 2000 hippos which gives these animals one of the densest populations in Africa. Crocodiles are also numerous, as well as impalas, waterbucks, warthogs, vervet monkeys, yellow baboons, bushbucks and kudus. The recently reintroduced rhino can be seen everywhere in the park now, but quite rarely, because of the small number. A small number of lions exist since they returned from Mozambique. Leopards also exist but are seldom seen due to their excellent camouflage and the dense woodlands in the park. A wide variety of birds can be seen all year round. Among them is the African Fish Eagle, Malawi's official bird.

There is one lodge in the park itself but there are several lodges just outside the entrance.
