Best Time to Visit

Cambodia’s changing seasons shape very different travel experiences, and the best time to visit depends on what you hope to discover. From golden sunshine and ancient temples to dramatic monsoon skies, each season reveals a unique side of the country.

The dry season, stretching from November to April, is the most popular time for travellers. With clear skies and comfortable temperatures, it is perfect for exploring the temples of Angkor, strolling through Phnom Penh’s markets, or relaxing by the beaches of Sihanoukville and the islands of Koh Rong. This is when Cambodia feels most accessible for outdoor adventures.

From April to June, the heat intensifies, making temple visits and long treks more challenging. This period is often better suited for slower, indoor experiences, such as discovering Khmer art and culture in museums or enjoying Cambodia’s evolving café scene. Despite the heat, it can be a rewarding time to see a quieter side of popular destinations.

The rainy season, from May to October, transforms the countryside. Torrential showers bring vibrant greenery, rice paddies shimmer with water, and Angkor Wat appears more atmospheric against the dramatic skies. While travel can be less predictable, this season offers fewer tourists and an enchanting backdrop for photography and cultural immersion.

Choosing when to visit Cambodia depends on your priorities: dry months for adventure and exploration, or the rains for tranquillity and lush landscapes.

Going to Angkor Wat to watch the sunrise may have become a touristy thing to do, but you'll be surprised to see how many locals enjoy it, as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. US and Canadian citizens need a visa to enter Cambodia. Tourist visas are available online (eVisa) or on arrival at major airports and land crossings. They are typically valid for 30 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your stay and have a blank page for the visa stamp.

Khmer is the official language. In cities like Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville, English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and with tour guides. In rural areas, English is less common, though French is sometimes spoken by older generations.

Angkor Wat and the surrounding temple complex near Siem Reap are the country’s crown jewel, especially at sunrise. Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace and National Museum give insight into Cambodia’s history, while the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Killing Fields are powerful reminders of the Khmer Rouge era. For nature, Tonlé Sap Lake offers floating villages, while coastal areas like Kep and Sihanoukville provide beaches. Battambang charms with colonial architecture and countryside scenery.

Cambodia is generally safe for travellers, with tourism being well established. Petty theft and scams can occur in busy areas, so keep valuables secure. Roads and traffic can be chaotic—use trusted taxis or tuk-tuks. When exploring temples or rural areas, watch your step, as uneven ground is common. Landmines remain in some remote areas, but tourist routes are cleared and safe.

Domestic flights connect Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville, saving time on long drives. Private cars with drivers are a comfortable option for intercity travel. Buses are widely available but vary in quality. Tuk-tuks are convenient for short rides in cities, while cycling is popular in Siem Reap to explore temple routes.

Cambodians value politeness and respect. A common greeting is the sampeah—placing palms together and bowing slightly. When visiting temples, dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) and remove shoes before entering. Avoid touching people on the head and use both hands when giving or receiving something. Bargaining is common in markets but should be friendly.

Cambodia has a tropical climate—hot and humid year-round. Light, breathable clothing is best, but modest dress is required for temples. A scarf or light shawl is handy for covering shoulders. Comfortable sandals or walking shoes are essential. Pack sunscreen, insect repellent, and a rain jacket or umbrella if travelling during the monsoon (May to October). A reusable water bottle is also useful, as staying hydrated is key.
