Overview
Take a trip to Benguerra Island on your Mozambique Vacation
Benguerra Island, located 14 km (8.5 mi) off the shore of Mozambique is the second largest island found in the Bazaruto Archipelago. Thanks to the incredible dive sites that surround the island, it is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations on a Mozambique vacation.
Crocodiles that have been found in three lakes on Benguerra support the idea that the island was once part of Mozambique’s mainland before breaking away along with some of the other islands that make up the Bazaruto Archipelago. Explorers originally came to the area in search of pearls resulting in Portuguese and Asian influences being felt to this day. Today, Benguerra supports a community of around 1,000 people who are part of the Tsonga subgroup called Khokha.
