Overview
Take a trip to Moshi on your Tanzania Vacation
Often considered the cleanest town in Tanzania, Moshi is located on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. With its three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira, Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa.
Despite the fact that Germany established a military camp in Moshi as early as August 1803, the territory was not given the status of town until 1956. By 1988 the region had become a municipality under Tanzanian law. It is hoped that by 2016, Moshi will attain city status.
Moshi is a small but lively market town with friendly locals. Fabrics, artwork and crafts are some of the most popular items on offer in the busy markets and tourists are often encouraged by locals to haggle to find the best bargain. Arabica coffee was first introduced to the region by Catholic missionaries in 1893. Today, it is one of the area’s most important exports with coffee plantations all around Moshi and on the slopes of Kilimanjaro.
On Tanzania travel, The peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro dominate the skyline of Moshi until the clouds that cluster daily around the mountaintop have risen. The town serves as the base for many who wish to climb the mountain and expeditions usually leave quite early in the morning when the air is still fresh and clear. It is true that most people go to Moshi for the mountain; however there is much to discover and enjoy in this laidback Tanzanian town.
