Manila is the capital city of the Philippines. One of 16 cities to comprise the national capital region of Metro Manila, the city is located on the island of Luzon, on the eastern shores of Manila Bay and a good starting point for a Philippines vacation.
While being the second most populous city in the Philippines, Manila is the most densely populated city in the world, with over 1.6 million inhabitants covering a stretch of only 38.55 sq km.
Comprised of sixteen geographical districts, each with its own special features, Manila is home to many scientific and educational institutions, numerous sports facilities, and other culturally and historically significant venues. Manila is considered the nation's centre of education, business, culture, tourism, and transportation.
Manila was once considered the ‘Pearl of the Orient' for its ideal location with cross-Pacific sea trade routes. Under the administration of Spain for three centuries, Manila, as with the rest of the Philippines, is immersed in colonial architecture. This can be seen in its churches, forts, and older buildings, including those in the walled city of Intramuros, the oldest district and historic core of Manila, all to be enjoyed on Philippines vacation packages.
Rizal Park, located in the heart of Manila, is an urban oasis. A major tourist attraction, the park features various gardens, a museum, a library, a planetarium, monuments, and optimum spots for socializing, picnicking, and hosting various events.
Manila is varied as it is full of contrasts. The bustle of modern-day traffic alongside the trotting horses on cobbled streets in the walled city, or the avid nightlife set against the quiet halls of museums and art galleries, makes this city an exciting and diverse place to visit.
