Overview

Take a trip to Hobart on your Australia Vacation

Hobart, Tasmania’s capital, is located between the beautiful peak of Mount Wellington and the mouth of the Derwent River. Australia's second-oldest city after Sydney, it's an Australia vacation highlight for history and nature lovers alike, with quaint settlers’ cottages and grand mansions dotting its beautiful surrounds.

Disused warehouses have been converted into dockside cafes, artists’ studios, and restaurants. Try the fresh seafood at one of Hobart’s waterside restaurants while watching the colourful spinnakers bobbing on the water. Take a drive up to Mount Wellington where you can have a bird’s eye view of the surrounding area. Art is another major part of cultural life in Hobart, with the often irreverent Museum of Old and New Art being praised among the finest modern and contemporary art museums in the world.

Not too far away, Richmond is a picturesque, early Australian colonial village on the banks of the Coal River. It includes both Australia’s oldest jail and its oldest bridge. Not far away is the Port Arthur UNESCO heritage historic site, with its well preserved penal colony buildings. The surrounding Tasman peninsula also offers spectacular clifftop walks through pristine wilderness.

Be sure to include one of our Hobart tours in your Australia vacation package, as its historic charm, vibrant arts scene, stunning harbor, and proximity to natural wonders, is bound to impress.

Sydney and Melbourne are a great combination for first-time visitors to Australia, with Brisbane, Adelaide and/or the Outback added in, depending on how much time you have. Returnees should take in Perth, Darwin and the Kakadu National Park area and/or Tasmania if they can, plus spend some time in the cities they loved the first time around
