Full Day Tiwi Aboriginal Cultural Experience

On arrival at Bathurst Island, meet your local guide who will take you on a journey through the progressive, modern day Aboriginal community of Nguiu (Wurrumiyanga). Visit the museum with its interesting displays of traditional art and depictions of the Tiwi dreamtime stories and the its unique Tiwi style Catholic Church. Hear about the colourful history of the early mission days and learn how the Tiwi people have blended their culture with Christianity. Be taken through the successful Arts and Crafts Centres and see where the artist’s work. During morning tea, we spend time with some Tiwi Ladies enjoying billy tea and damper while they work on their weaving and painting. Your guides and the ladies also demonstrate their totem dances and perform a smoking ceremony to bless the visitors and explain the meanings behind them. Learn some of the complex rituals associated with the Pukamani (burial ceremony). Set out for a scenic drive through the wilderness of Bathurst Island. Enjoy lunch and visit a local waterhole and pristine beach environs. Learn about traditional bush tuckers, bush medicine and natural fibres and dyes on your return to the community before your return to Darwin.

Darwin to Kakadu National Park

Explore one of the world’s greatest nature reserves and World Heritage Area listed for its cultural and natural heritage. The name Kakadu derived from the Gagudju speaking people, a language spoken in the park until the turn of the 20th century. In Ubirr, climb up through the ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries, believed to be 20,000 years old, to the lookout for a spectacular view over the surrounding wetlands. Included in today is Jumping Crocodile Cruise, Kadadu National Park and the Marawuddi Art Gallery.

Early morning, join a cruise on Yellow Water Billabong, Kakadu’s most famous wetland. The picturesque yellow waters are home to thousands of saltwater crocodiles and up to 60 species of colourful birdlife. Wander around the Nourlangie Rock art site. It has provided shelter to the indigenous people for many thousands of years, and while taking shelter, the rock evolved into a canvas that illustrates the traditional owner's deep spiritual culture.

This morning learn about bush medicine, a presentation teaching about the use of the plants with an interpreter. Then we head to the airport for flight to Cairns (flight not included). Today you will explore the rainforest and amazing landscapes of the Daintree Wilderness area. Travel to one of Australia's great scenic Highways winding along the coastline, passing isolated beaches where the rainforest clad mountains plunge into the Coral Sea. You will take a stroll in the beautiful Mossman gorge. Explore the townships delightful string of store fronts presented in the style of yesteryear. Here you will find local art and craft shops including handmade pottery, textile art and painting, local jams and produce, souvenirs and tropical clothing. Visit an Aboriginal art gallery featuring authentic Aboriginal artefacts and original artworks. Your local Aboriginal tour guide will teach you about culturally significant areas and the relationships the Kuku Yalanji people still have with their land. Learn the history, culture and traditions of the local Aboriginal people and the area. Walk through the rainforest and coastal habitats learning about the different environments, different foods and medicines utilised from nature, sample some seasonal bush tucker, collect shellfish and learn traditional Aboriginal hunting practices, have a go at spear throwing and if you are lucky, catch a mud crab. Tour can also include a swim in a pristine freshwater stream.
