Overview
Take a trip to Monteverde on your Costa Rica Vacation
Despite being a small town, Monteverde is one of Costa Rica’s most famous, and most visited, ecotourism destinations. Located in the Cordillera de Tilarán, the region is home to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, an increasingly popular spot with tourists on a Costa Rica vacation.
The area that now constitutes Monteverde was founded by American Quakers whose pacifist beliefs forced them to leave the United States during the Korean War in order to avoid the draft. The cool climate supported dairy farming and the Quakers were able to build a home. In 1972, scientists George Powell and Quaker Wilford Guindon established the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve to conserve the area.
Due to its high altitude, over 1,440 m (4,662 ft) above sea level, Monteverde is covered in cloud forests that provide a great deal of moisture to the surrounding area thus supporting a unique and diverse ecosystem. The reserve hosts nine main trails that are easy to access. There is a larger network of less accessible trails as well as a number of research stations throughout. The scenery and wildlife are incredible and there are many activities to enjoy on Costa Rica tours including zip-line canopies, horseback riding, hiking, suspension bridges, canyoning and more. With over 100 mammal species, more than 400 bird species and numerous plant species, Monteverde is a true nature lovers' destination.

Costa Rican Colón (CRC)What do the experts say?
Costa Rica is not just all about the beaches. There is so much more to discover including volcanoes, lush rainforests, and abundant wildlife.
Costa Rica is also globally admired for its values - the country’s commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices is truly part of its DNA
If your main interest is beach time, December to April offers the best weather. However do not discount visiting during the Green Season in September, which reveals a different side of the country, full of wildlife and vibrant scenery.
I love the country’s rich biodiversity and stunning natural beauty. It combines rainforests, volcanoes, and beaches in one destination.
