Overview

Take a trip to Lake District on your England Vacation

Located in extreme north-west England, the Lake District is a scenic National Park made up of a series of serene lakes, rugged mountains and several attractive market towns. The landscape of the Lake District will definitely charm you on an England vacation with its green fields, stone cottages, dry stone walls and rolling fells. The principal lakes are Coniston, Windermere, Ullswater and Derwentwater, all surrounded by magnificent terrain. One way of enjoying the lakes is by taking a boat cruise. Another is to take short walks or long hikes in the Lake District. There are companies that organize walking itineraries including accommodation, transfer of luggage from one point to another and detailed maps showing points of interest.

Also, linger a while in one of the market towns such as Keswick, Ambleside or Coniston, perfect for browsing the small shops, partaking of lunch or a typical afternoon tea. William Wordsworth, the famous English poet, used to live at Dove Cottage on the edge of Grasmere. The cottage's rooms are full of artifacts from the time he lived there. The Wordsworth Museum & Art Gallery next door houses one of the main Wordsworth collections including many original manuscripts.

The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway is a pocket-sized railway originally built to ferry iron ore from the mines out to the coast. These days, it is a major attraction with miniature steam trains that travel down the Eskdale valley between the coastal town of Ravenglass and the village of Dalegart—a great way to view the countryside on a trip to England. Beatrix Potter spent much of her time here. When she died, she left 14 farms and 4000 acres of land of her own beloved countryside to the National Trust for all to enjoy. Hill Top is a 17th Century house near Hawkshead that was once her home and is open to the public as a writer's house museum. The Lakeland Motor Museum has a collection of 30,000 exhibits including 140 classic cars and motorbikes.

A traditional British high tea is a must do in my option. If traditional isnt your cup of tea there are a seemingly endless amount of themed teas including but not limited to Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Bridgerton and Wizard themed.

I love the history of England. There is so much to see and experience not only in regards to history but art and architecture, natural beauty and so much more. It is a very easy country to get around and also very easy to use it as a jumping off point for visiting the rest of Europe.

Late spring to early fall for the best chance of nice weather or during Christmas. London is magical at Christmas time.

The English are actually proud of their cuisine (mostly stereotyped as bland). Afternoon Tea, A full English Breakfast, a Chippy Stand, traditional Sunday roast - all must tries!
