Provence, a region to the northwest of the Riviera, carries the legacy of Roman history, revealed through its colourful countryside, diverse traditions, wine, and cuisine.
Aix-en-Provence, known as the city of a thousand fountains, boasts leafy squares with 17th and 18th century mansions. The pedestrian-only old town, with its charming Cours Mirabeau, is a perfect spot for cafe-hopping. Attractions include an exquisite old cathedral and an impressive Hotel de Ville.
Historic Avignon, straddling the Rhone River, is home to the famous but incomplete Pont d'Avignon, and the stunning Pope's Palace, the largest Gothic palace in Europe. Don't miss the Festival d’Avignon in July, a massive celebration of the performing arts.
Arles, a well-preserved medieval town, once inspired Picasso and Van Gogh. Its Roman heritage shines with the remarkable Roman amphitheatre, now used for bullfights and cultural events.
Nimes, another Roman gem, features the best-preserved Roman amphitheatre in France and the beautifully maintained Maison Carree, one of the world's most intact Roman temples. Nearby, the UNESCO-listed Pont du Gard is a towering Roman aqueduct.
The Camargue, Europe's largest river delta, is a birdwatcher's paradise, housing over 400 avian species, including flamingos, and is famous for its wild horses and bulls.
In Orange, Roman history comes to life through its Ancient Theatre and Triumphal Arch. The Municipal Museum showcases artifacts from local excavations, while the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth, dating back to the 4th century, offers a glimpse into Romanesque architecture.

Everything was wonderful. Everything went smoothly. The individual tours were wonderful and all the guides were exceptional. A lot of traveling-the flight was very good on Cathay Pacific would highly recommend their airline seats were comfortable and spaced well. Being on an airplane for 16 hours sucks in general, but other than being a little sore from being stuck in one place all was good.
