Overview

Take a trip to Amman on your Jordan Vacation

Situated in a hilly area of northwestern Jordan are Amman, the country’s capital and largest city. An ancient city, Amman currently serves as Jordan’s political, cultural and commercial centre and an excellent starting point on a Jordan vacation.

Amman is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The history spans nine millennia, dating as far back as the Stone Age. Amman has been inhabited by many civilizations including the Assyrians, the Babylonians and the Persians before becoming part of the Roman Empire. Under the Ottoman Empire, the city fell into decline but was revived with the construction of a railroad in 1902. Amman became a busy trade route and began to grow and when Jordan became independent in 1946, Amman was named as its capital.

Today, Amman can be divided into two distinct parts on trips to Jordan. East Amman is the historic city centre and is a hub of cultural activities that represent a more traditional way of life. The western part of the city is more prosperous and hosts most of the city’s economic activities. As a result of these two parts, Amman is an area of contrasts offering a unique blend of old and new to be experienced on Jordan tours. It has grown into a modern metropolis that is considered by many to be one of the most liberal cities in the Arab world.

I love learning about Nicaragua's culture and experiencing its Spanish influence in some cities. I was only there for five days, but I'll never forget how delicious the food was and how welcoming and extremely polite the people were.

The Day of the Dead in Guatemala is a great local tradition where people gather to fly giant, intricately decorated kites to honour the dead.

The colourful Spanish architecture, the beautiful scenery, particularly the stunning lakes, and the Mayan ruins are what I love most about Guatemala!
