Lying on the Arabian Sea, along the Gulf of Oman is Muscat, a progressive and forward-thinking city that serves as the capital of Oman. Representing a crossroads of cultures and an interesting blend of old and new, Muscat is a must-see destination on an Oman vacation.
It is not surprising that the name Muscat translates to “anchorage” as the sea has always played a major role in the city’s history. A trading post since as early as the first century AD, Muscat helped to connect the east to the west. The city gained momentum during the 16th century attracting Portuguese explorers who ruled until 1650. Muscat became the capital in 1793 and Oman remained relatively isolated from the rest of the world until the 1970s when it began to open its doors to trade and tourism.
Muscat has witnessed a great deal of growth and has expanded in recent decades. Ancient cultural heritage and architecture coexist with modern buildings. While visiting Oman, it is interesting that buildings in the city never rise more than ten stories to ensure that the natural beauty of Muscat’s mountainous backdrop is never covered by man-made structures. Tourists are welcome in this incredibly clean and progressive Arab city and are encouraged to discover a wide variety of nature, museums and old markets while still enjoying modern architecture and amenities.
