Overview

Take a trip to Ankara on your Türkiye Vacation

Ankara is the second largest city in Türkiye and serves as the capital of the country. It is centrally located in Anatolia, hosting the Turkish government as well as all foreign embassies. As well as being the capital, Ankara is an important commercial and industrial city to be visited on a Türkiye vacation.

Since independence, Ankara has grown into an international city that offers both ancient sites and modern facilities on your Türkiye vacation. The major concentration of historic sites in Ankara is found on or around an ancient hill that is topped by the city’s ancient Citadel. Visitors are encouraged to visit the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations which is considered one of Türkiye’s best museums housing artifacts that date back to Paleolithic times.

Few places layer ancient civilizations quite like Turkey. From the ruins of Ephesus, the legendary city of Troy, and the underground cities of Cappadocia, to the Byzantine and Ottoman grandeur of Istanbul - it's a living museum. Walking through the Hagia Sophia or along the ancient walls of Constantinople is like stepping into a history book.

Turkish cuisine is seriously underrated globally. From a simple simit on the street to a full meze spread and a sizzling kebab, every meal is an experience. And of course, Turkish tea and baklava are daily rituals you don’t want to miss.

History

The history of Ankara can be traced as far back as the Hattic civilization of the Bronze Age. The region came under the control of the Hittites who were then followed by the Phrygians, Lydians and Persians. The Galatians, a Celtic race, arrived in the 3rd century BC and made Ankara their capital. Ankara truly began to emerge under the leadership of Atatürk, a revolutionary statesman, during the national resistance following the First World War and was declared the capital of the new Republic of Turkey in 1923.
