Overview

Take a trip to Salta on your Argentina Vacation

Salta is the seventh-largest city in Argentina and the centre of the nation’s tourism industry in the northwest. Within the city, travellers can tour the Spanish colonial buildings, including the neoclassical Cathedral of Salta and the Cabilda (town hall), or see the famous Inca mummies of the High Mountain Archaeological Museum (MAAM). Ride the cable car near Plaza del Lago for the best views of the city centre.

Outside the city, the Salta landscape gives way to dramatic rocks and colourful hills, including the startling seven-coloured valley of Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Travellers can also connect to the nearby Train to the Clouds, one of the highest train rides in the world, or tour the vineyards of Cafayate, known for the white wine Torrontes.

The best time to visit Argentina depends on the region you want to see, but Spring (September-November) and Autumn (March-May) are generally ideal for visiting Buenos Aires, Mendoza, and Iguazú Falls, offering pleasant weather and beautiful scenery. For Patagonia, the summer months (December-March) are best for hiking and accessible trails, though you can visit other times of year with appropriate clothing.

Argentina’s climate varies widely: the north is subtropical, the Pampas are temperate, the Andes are cooler, and Patagonia is cold and windy. Travelers should pack accordingly for each region.
