Overview

Take a trip to San Carlos de Bariloche on your Argentina Vacation

The city of San Carlos Bariloche, usually shortened to just Bariloche, is located in Argentina’s Río Negro province. Nestled in the foothills of the Andes, the city, when on Argentina tours, is situated on the southern shore of Nahuel Huapi Lake, surrounded by Nahuel Huapi National Park.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the location of the city was an important pathway through the Andes, connecting Chile and Argentina. This pathway was used by Spanish conquistadors and later, by Jesuit missionaries. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Argentine government took control of the area and immigration of white settlers began. The foundations of the modern city were laid by Austrian and German settlers and the city was officially founded in May 1902. With the arrival of a railroad in the 1930s, the town began to grow as a tourist destination.

Today, tourism is the main economic activity in Bariloche as the city has the benefit of being a year-round destination. During the winter months, it is a haven for skiers and is home to Cerro Catedral, the biggest ski centre in South America. Summer months offer stunning beaches, excellent fishing as well as trekking in the mountains. With only a few mountain huts, the range is very wild and uninhabited making for an incredible journey on an Argentina vacation.

The best time to visit Argentina depends on the region you want to see, but Spring (September-November) and Autumn (March-May) are generally ideal for visiting Buenos Aires, Mendoza, and Iguazú Falls, offering pleasant weather and beautiful scenery. For Patagonia, the summer months (December-March) are best for hiking and accessible trails, though you can visit other times of year with appropriate clothing.

Argentina’s climate varies widely: the north is subtropical, the Pampas are temperate, the Andes are cooler, and Patagonia is cold and windy. Travelers should pack accordingly for each region.
