Overview

Take a trip to Sucre on your Bolivia Vacation

The constitutional capital of Bolivia, Sucre is found in the south-central part of the country. It is often considered one of Bolivia’s most beautiful cities and is the symbolic heart of the country, something to enjoy on a Bolivia vacation.

Sucre was founded in 1538 by the Spanish and was heavily influenced by Spanish culture and architecture during the colonial era. In 1809, the beginning of the Bolivian independence movement was signalled by the ringing of the bell of Sucre’s Basilica of Saint Francisco. Sucre has later named the capital of the newly independent Alto Peru (which would become Bolivia) in 1876. In 1825, South American revolutionaries arrived in the city and signed Bolivia’s declaration of independence and Sucre became the country’s capital.

UNESCO named the city a cultural World Heritage Site in 1991 and Sucre has remained one of the most interesting places in Bolivia. Its downtown area is still reminiscent of the 18th and 19th centuries and the city serves as a gateway to smaller villages dating back to colonial times. Sucre has always been a city of learning and is home to San Francisco Xavier University, the second oldest university on the continent that has educated many South American presidents. The colonial architecture, immense history and relaxed atmosphere are what continue to bring thousands of visitors to Sucre annually on Bolivia tours.

Globetrotters should try to experience The Gorilla Naming Ceremony : Culturally, the naming of an infant is a big affair, and Rwanda has adopted the same cultural event with the New-born Mountain Gorillas, as way to highlight the need to protect these gentle giants that were on the verge of being hunted to extinction.
