Essential Tips for Staying Safe in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

No other South American city enjoys the fame and reputation of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s second-largest metropolis. Equally famous, however, is its crime rate, which has led many travellers to drop Rio off their bucket list.

That’s a great shame because most of Rio de Janeiro’s visitors enjoy the city without incident. In fact, the city’s violent crime rate has plummeted in the last decade. A few extra precautions, however, will keep you within the happy majority.

Leave all valuables you don’t need at home.

Rio is not Miami. There is nobody you need to impress here. We’re not saying you can’t or shouldn’t dress nicely, but flashy jewelry, including watches, will only get you the wrong kind of attention. Leave it at home.

Learn some Portuguese.

Brazilian police are generally helpful and reliable, but few speak a second language. The tourist police (DEAT) can help if you run into trouble, but a few phrases in Portuguese will help keep you out of it in the first place and go a long way toward endearing you to the locals.

Carry only what you need.

A photocopy of your passport, emergency contact details (including your hotel), a small public phone card, and minimal cash is usually enough to get you through a day in Rio. Carry a credit card if you’re planning on shopping or dining out.

Skip that night stroll along the beach.

There is understandably no resisting the beauty and appeal of Copacabana, stretching out under the Brazilian sun. This is one tourist beach that more than lives up to its lofty reputation, but it’s also to be avoided after dark as muggings are common. If you find yourself here during the night hours, stick to the well-lit areas surrounding the kiosks and eateries.

Get cabs after dark.

Taxis cost roughly half the price of those in most North American cities and will more than pay you back with peace of mind. They are the quickest and safest way of getting around Rio at night, whether you’re just out for dinner or partying the night away. The subway is an affordable and safe option during the day, but you should avoid public buses and tunnels connecting Copacabana to Ipanema at night.

Blend in (yes, we mean your clothes).

Passing as a local is your best defence against crime in any city, and in multicultural Brazil, any visitor can do so. Confine your beachwear to the beach. That means no shorts, cut-offs, or flip-flops in the street. Jeans or trousers and sensible walking shoes are a safe bet with your valuables and camera hidden under a loose top.

Beware the kindness of strangers.

One common Rio scam involves a passerby “accidentally” spilling something on you before offering to clean it up. Just walk away before their accomplice comes to relieve you of all you hold near and dear! Taking your eyes off your drink or accepting one from an unknown source is a bad idea in any public bar. In Rio, however, it’s been known to bring sudden drowsiness, prompting a generous stranger to kindly help tourists back to their hotel room before helping themselves to any valuables.

Know where you are and plan your day.

Awareness of where you are and where you plan to visit is good globetrotting advice in general, really, but in Rio, this usually means staying in the Zona Sul, including Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Flamengo, and nearby areas. The northern part of the city is notably rougher and of very little interest to visitors. A favela tour can be a safe and fascinating part of your Rio adventure, but should only be done with an experienced guide.

With preparation and some basic precautions, Rio de Janeiro can be the ultimate globetrotter’s blend of culture, beautiful beaches, incredible cuisine, and memories to last a lifetime.

Brazil is great to visit all year round, but December to March is ideal for experiencing the vibrant summer energy and major events like Carnaval. For those who want to search for wildlife in the Amazon & Pantanal, I would suggest April to October

Travellers must plan for diverse weather as the country ranges from tropical in the north (Amazon rainforest -with high humidity and rain) to temperate in the south, with hot, dry inland areas and a semi-arid Northeast region experiencing less rain.

Our first trip with Goway was a total joy. Shalini worked with me to plan a trip for 5 adults to Portugal. She is a gem! Always responded quickly and offered great suggestions for activities, worked with our preferences and created an ideal itinerary for a week in Porto and Lisbon. The tours were excellent with engaging local guides. The food tour in Lisbon was a highlight. Everything was top notch - flight schedule, hotels, activities, even the weather! Patricia

It is with the utmost pleasure and heartfelt appreciation that I share my exceptional experience working with Taha Colombowala, Goway's distinguished Groups Specialist. Our journey together began in October 2023, when Taha took the helm in orchestrating what was to be a remarkable group trip to Ghana. When unforeseen circumstances necessitated a change in plans, Taha demonstrated his extraordinary expertise by recommending Morocco as an alternative destination — a suggestion that proved to be nothing short of absolutely brilliant! From the very first interaction to the final farewell, Taha has been a consummate professional in every sense of the word. His lightning-fast response times, encyclopedic knowledge of destinations, and remarkable ability to pivot seamlessly under pressure are truly second to none. What sets Taha apart, however, is not only his professional acumen but also his warm, patient, and genuinely enthusiastic attitude toward accommodating the unique needs and personalities of every member of our group. Taha Colombowala is, without question, a shining star within the Goway family, and an extraordinary ambassador for everything the brand represents. I cannot recommend him highly enough — he has exceeded every expectation and then some. Working with Taha has been an absolute privilege, and I look forward to many more incredible adventures ahead!DESIREE DUCKETT

We recently completed a custom Vietnam tour organized by Goway, and it was everything we asked for and more. We would definitely choose Goway again. The true highlights of our trip, however, were our two guides: Vu Dang and Thien. They truly made our experience unforgettable. Both were incredibly knowledgeable, thoughtful, and kind. Their pride in their Vietnamese heritage shone through in every conversation, making our learning experience both deep and engaging. We learned so much in such a short time, and it was always fascinating. I would highly recommend these two guides to anyone visiting Vietnam!Laura Derbyshire

Everything was expertly planned, from the drivers to the hotels to the tours to the flights. We particularly enjoyed Hobart and the animal sanctuary, Adelaide and the trip to Kangaroo Island, Melbourne and the evening tour with dinner and drinks, and Sydney with the private boat cruise of the Harbour. We will definitely use Goway again.SARA Wiebe

There were 4 travelers on this trip. All of us were in our late 70's. We started planning this trip 6 months prior to our travel date and had a lot of questions regarding this trip. Our Goway Travel Specialist, Karen Larrota, always answered our questions in a timely and complete manner. We traveled to Quito, Ecuador, the Galapagos, The Sacred Valley in Peru, Machu Picchu, and Cusco in Peru. Not only were the destinations and accommodations excellent, but every tour guide and driver were beyond excellent. The entire trip went smoothly every step of the way, which was amazing given the fact that there were numerous flights and hotels included in our package. We found out that the tour company that Goway used, Condor Travel, checked on us with our guide to make sure we were doing OK which we thought was very nice but also amusing as we are fairly fit older adults. Would also like to mention that we did a cruise thru the Galapagos on the Galapagos Legend which was arranged thru Go Galapagos - Kleintouurs. This portion of our tour was also excellent as were the wildlife guides and staff. We continue to discuss how wonderful this trip was with our family and friends and how wonderful this experience was. Would definately use Goway for our travel needs in the future.Dianne
