Overview

Take a trip to Fortaleza on your Brazil Vacation

The fifth largest city in Brazil, Fortaleza is located in the northeastern part of the country and serves as the state capital of Ceará. Situated near the Atlantic Ocean, Fortaleza provides an excellent base for discovering beaches and fishing villages along the coast while on Brazil tours.

Although the Portuguese attempted to settle Fortaleza early in the 17th century, they were unsuccessful resulting in Dutch colonization in 1637. Less than twenty years later, the Dutch abandoned the settlement allowing the Portuguese to reclaim the area from which a village and then a city emerged. Along with cattle ranchers, cotton exports helped Fortaleza to become an important city during the 19th century. One of the most significant and famous events in Fortaleza’s history came when the city chose to abolish slavery in 1884, four years before the rest of the country.

Recent decades have witnessed the city grow in the industry emerging as a popular tourist destination both domestically and internationally. Visitors on a Brazil vacation package come to enjoy the party atmosphere and incredible beaches available in Fortaleza. It is a haven for water sports including scuba diving in Pedra da Risca do Meio State Marine Park, a protected area about ten nautical miles from the shore. Praia do Futuro offers good surfing (and competitions) as well as excellent conditions for kite and windsurfing. With ten hours of sunshine a day and a busy nightlife, Fortaleza is an incredible tropical paradise.

Brazil is great to visit all year round, but December to March is ideal for experiencing the vibrant summer energy and major events like Carnaval. For those who want to search for wildlife in the Amazon & Pantanal, I would suggest April to October

Travelers must plan for diverse weather as the country ranges from tropical in the north (Amazon rainforest -with high humidity and rain) to temperate in the south, with hot, dry inland areas and a semi-arid Northeast region experiencing less rain

There is so much to love about Brazil. Not only does it have stunning natural beauty - think the Amazon rainforest or its famous beaches - but it has such a vibrant and diverse culture filled with music, dance and delicious food
