From Georgetown to Iwokrama River Lodge & Canopy Heights

This immersive adventure begins with a scheduled flight over Guyana's pristine, unbroken rainforest to Fair View Airstrip, followedby a quick land transfer to Iwokrama River Lodge. From here you leave by boat to explore Turtle Mountain on an exhilarating (though steep) forest hike that ends with breathtaking views over the panoramic rainforest canopy. Chances are that you might spot Red Howler monkeys and other exotic wildlife. You can opt for a more tranquil boat trip to Stanley Lake instead. After lunch, journey along the only north-south access road in Guyana to Atta Rainforest Lodge, your final location for the day. On the way, since there is very little traffic, you might see Agouti, Tapir, Black Curassow, and if you're very lucky, the elusive Jaguar. Atta Rainforest Lodge is home to the famous Iwokrama Canopy Walkway and exploring the clearings around the lodge is a great place to see one of Guyana's 'must-see' birds, the Crimson Fruitcrow and families of Black Currassow.

Journey to Karanambu: Where River Meets Savannah

After breakfast you will travelthrough the Iwokrama Rainforest to Ginep Landing for a boat trip down the Rupununi River to Karanambu Lodge, once home to conservationist and world-renowned expert on giant otters, Diane McTurk. A young David Attenborough also spent some time here and wrote about it in his book 'Zoo Quest to Guiana.' This 110-square-mile former ranch blends wetlands, forest, and savannah, supporting over 600 bird species, 200 mammals, and 700 fish. Karanambu offers two guided excursions each day (one early in the morning and another later afternoon into evening) by boat, 4x4, or on foot. Watch for Giant River Otters, the Victoria amazonica waterlily blooming at dusk, and nocturnal wildlife, spotlighting Black Caiman and other creatures of the night.

Crossing into French Guiana - St. Laurent and the Guiana Space Center at Kourou

With a packed breakfast in hand, your trip starts early travelling east along Suriname's coastal road to the Albina border station. After quick formalities, a ferry crosses the Maroni River into French Guiana, where EU standards are immediately evident: every car seems to be a late-model Mercedes, Volkswagen or Peugeot, the roads are in near perfect condition, espresso coffee is on tap almost everywhere and the Euro is the currency of choice. Upon arrival in St. Laurent du Maroni enjoy a mini city tour and a visit to the historic Camp de la Transportation, once a transit point for slaves, indentured laborers, and political prisoners. Afterwards, take a packed lunch as you continue your journey to Kourou for a tour of the Guiana Space Center, exploring launch pads, assembly buildings, and control centers. The tour at the Space Center is conducted in French, but your guide will supply translations as often as possible.

Exploring the Historic Salvation Islands (Devil's Island)

After an early breakfast, transfer to the dock in Kourou for your departure to the iles du Salut, a trio of islands famously associated with French penal history. The catamaran will dock at ile Royale, home to the oldest and most extensive prison buildings, including an old church, administration blocks, and officers' quarters. Visitors can explore cell blocks, dormitories, and the children's cemetery, while spotting sea turtles along the dock. While ile Saint-Joseph, known as the silent island, is visible, the infamous ile du Diable (Devil's Island), is sadly inaccessible to visitors. French Army officer Alfred Dreyfus (of the famous Dreyfus Affair) was incarcerated here, as was French convict 'Papillon,'both commemorated in successful movies. The day concludes with a return to Kourou and transfer to Cayenne.
