Overview
Take a trip to Suva on your Fiji Vacation
The city of Suva, located on the south east coast of Viti Levu, is Fiji’s political and administrative capital and the largest and most cosmopolitan city in the South Pacific on a Fiji vacation. It contains the majority of the country’s population including expats and students from all over the Pacific region.
On trips to Fiji, Suva does experience frequent rain and there are usually clouds hovering above the city. Interestingly enough, it was originally built on a reclaimed mangrove swamp.
It is a harbour city and is situated on a hilly peninsula. The city’s architecture is a mixture of modern and traditional colonial styles to be enjoyed on Suva tours.
It has many modern shopping malls and there is excellent shopping on centrally located Cumming Street. For a scenic walk, take a stroll on the Queen Elizabeth Drive. For things to do in Suva on a Fiji vacation, visit “Little India” in the town where you will find curry houses and sari shops. Visit the Fiji Museum located in the Botanical Gardens and view archaeological material dating back over 3000 years including the most extensive collection of Fijian artifacts in the world.
And believe it or not, Suva boasts 78 different parks.

For first-time visitors, I suggest splitting their stay to experience a few nights at a resort along the Coral Coast, where they could experience a visit to a local village, then end their trip at one of the islands in the Mamanucas to experience some different beaches and activities. For returning visitors, I recommend exploring a different group of islands, such as heading to one of the Northern Islands, which is a short flight from Nadi.
