Ultimate Guide to the Islands of French Polynesia

When you picture French Polynesia, what comes to mind? Surely, you see colours – brilliant shades of blue, vibrant greens, and a palette of oranges and reds for sunsets. You may imagine jagged, lush mountains, crystal-clear waters, and overwater bungalows topped by palm fronds. Seeing islands like Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Moorea brings these fantastic images to life. The islands of French Polynesia are a veritable paradise.

Located in the South Pacific, the “overseas collectivity of the French Republic” is known for its mind-blowing lagoons, incredible luxury accommodations, and the legendary Tahiti and Bora Bora. While these two shining stars deserve their reputation, many travellers overlook that French Polynesia is composed of 118 islands and atolls, many of which offer fantastic sights and activities, often with fewer tourists and lower price points. If you’re contemplating a trip to French Polynesia, consider some of the lesser known yet equally worthy destinations in this island paradise.

Beyond Bora Bora

Bora Bora is, without a doubt, one of the most renowned destinations in the world for honeymooners, luxury-seekers, and just lovers of beauty – and for good reason. Globetrotters will find world-class resorts, some of which offer iconic overwater bungalows on any Bora Bora vacation. There is also excellent snorkelling, diving, other thrilling water activities, and sumptuous world-class spas.

Tranquillity in Taha’a

While Bora Bora caters to couples looking for quiet time and pampering in a stunning setting, many other islands in French Polynesia can satisfy your taste for adventure. If you’re seeking a true retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life, you’ll find it in Taha’a. Part of the Society Islands (one of five groups of islands in French Polynesia), Taha’a is known for its sweet-smelling air, seclusion, and motu, or tiny islets that surround the island.

The scent of vanilla permeates the air around you, with about 70-80% of the vanilla produced in French Polynesia grown in Taha’a. The fact that it is only accessible by boat from its sister island, Raiatea, meaning you won’t be sharing the island with as many tourists, makes Taha’a even sweeter. However, it’s not remote – Bora Bora is visible from Taha’a’s shores.

There are lots of enjoyable activities in Taha’a. Spend a half or full day on your own motu – snorkel, have a picnic, or just lay under a coconut tree. Explore the vanilla plantations and pearl farms, visit botanical gardens or a sea turtle preserve, or hike along one of the island’s beautiful trails.

Rangiroa: A Water-Lover’s Paradise

The largest atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago, Rangiroa boasts a massive, gorgeous lagoon, endless snorkelling and swimming spots, and some of the world’s best dive sites.

One not-to-be-missed destination in Rangiroa is Île aux Récifs, where you’ll find numerous “feo,” or coral outcrops dissected by channels and pools – perfect for swimming. The Lagon Bleu is made up of a string of coral reefs and motu, forming a lagoon within a lagoon.

For accommodation, consider the Hotel Kia Ora Resort and Spa. Located on the lagoon side of the atoll, surrounded by a coconut plantation, the hotel offers a variety of room types, including overwater bungalows and beach-front bungalows with private jacuzzies. Watching the sunset over a sparkling lagoon, cocktail in hand, from your own private jacuzzi? Yes, please.

Magical Moorea

Breathtaking, striking, unforgettable. These are just a few words used to describe Moorea, but if you’re fortunate enough to see it with your own eyes, it may leave you speechless.

Located only minutes from the island of Tahiti, Moorea offers something for every kind of traveller. One of the island’s major draws is the jaw-dropping lagoon. You can also swim in spectacular, clear waters with sharks, rays, and schools of fish. Active travellers can learn to kitesurf or go kayaking, horseback riding, or hiking. Simply relaxing on the beach or by the pool is, of course, always a great option. For luxe accommodation, consider the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa, the Sofitel Moorea La Ora, or the Moorea Pearl Resort and Spa, which offers beautiful overwater bungalows.

Take to the Seas

A luxury cruise is a fantastic way to indulge yourself and see the islands of French Polynesia if you’re looking for something different or you’d like to escape from the land for a few days. There are various activities aboard the luxurious cruise boats, including snorkelling, kayaking, swimming, and more. If you’re planning a Bora Bora vacation or a trip to the other islands of French Polynesia, consider yourself very lucky. You’re in store for stunning scenery, world-class accommodation, and total relaxation. Enjoy!

The Food - Polynesian cuisine is based upon using top quality fresh local produce and both savory and sweet dishes often flavored with vanilla or coconut milk. It's surprising to hear many of the perishable ingredients that go into your meals are flown in from various other international countries, and yet, can still taste so fresh and exquisite.

Our rep at GoWay, Kimberly, was fantastic from start to finish. She came up with the exact itinerary we wanted for Melbourne, Uluru, Cairns and Sydney, and assisted us with both international and domestic flights to help us get the best rates. Once we were on the trip, everything flowed seamlessly and every tour and transport was on time.Lisa Wildes

As a travel agent, this is not the first time I’ve chosen to work with Goway for organizing my clients’ trip, this time to Chile, and once again, the experience was outstanding from start to finish. Throughout the entire process, I could count on truly professional service from Susanna. My clients are very experienced travelers and requested a highly customized itinerary, including many unique experiences that are not typically included in standard tour programs. There were also several occasions when, on behalf of my clients, I requested changes to an already prepared itinerary. Susanna was consistently helpful, patient, understanding, and — just as importantly — incredibly kind and pleasant to work with. It was clear that she genuinely cared about creating the best possible experience for my clients. I’m also certain that much of the work she put in went well beyond standard hours and expectations. My clients returned absolutely delighted with their vacation, which is always the greatest confirmation of a job well done. Thank you, Susanna, for your dedication and exceptional support. And thank you, Goway, for another wonderful experience!Beata

We booked our 3,week tour of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia and overall it was an excellent experience. I typically book my own travel, but travelling with a group and wanting tours in each destination made GoWay a great choice. We had great hotels and good guides in each city. I will say that our standout guide was Romeo Tran in Ho Chi Minh City. We spent a few days in the city, as well as an over night boat ride on the delta, and he was fantastic. We had alot of fun with him, and would highly recommend him in particular. Neil Braun

We booked through Paula Williamson in the Toronto office, a Great Journeys New Zealand trip and it was fantastic! Although I had already scheduled a trip on The Ghan train in Australia, Paula helped me work it all as one huge 45 day trip including Bali Indonesia. My favorite was the New Zealand trip as I’d never been there before and the tour guide Toni was so spectacular and caring. I’m so pleased Goway was involved and I didn’t require any additional assistance once We'd started the first flight March 8. If we do another overseas trip, Goway will be involved.John

Michael Keon arranged our recent trip to Malta. I gave him a rough outline of what we were looking for and he responded quickly making great suggestions, offering alternatives as needed and booking everything. The hotel, excursions and transport he arranged were all exactly what we hoped for. We will be asking Michael to book our future European vacations. Mayssa Mirshak

Our first trip with Goway was a total joy. Shalini worked with me to plan a trip for 5 adults to Portugal. She is a gem! Always responded quickly and offered great suggestions for activities, worked with our preferences and created an ideal itinerary for a week in Porto and Lisbon. The tours were excellent with engaging local guides. The food tour in Lisbon was a highlight. Everything was top notch - flight schedule, hotels, activities, even the weather! Patricia

It is with the utmost pleasure and heartfelt appreciation that I share my exceptional experience working with Taha Colombowala, Goway's distinguished Groups Specialist. Our journey together began in October 2023, when Taha took the helm in orchestrating what was to be a remarkable group trip to Ghana. When unforeseen circumstances necessitated a change in plans, Taha demonstrated his extraordinary expertise by recommending Morocco as an alternative destination — a suggestion that proved to be nothing short of absolutely brilliant! From the very first interaction to the final farewell, Taha has been a consummate professional in every sense of the word. His lightning-fast response times, encyclopedic knowledge of destinations, and remarkable ability to pivot seamlessly under pressure are truly second to none. What sets Taha apart, however, is not only his professional acumen but also his warm, patient, and genuinely enthusiastic attitude toward accommodating the unique needs and personalities of every member of our group. Taha Colombowala is, without question, a shining star within the Goway family, and an extraordinary ambassador for everything the brand represents. I cannot recommend him highly enough — he has exceeded every expectation and then some. Working with Taha has been an absolute privilege, and I look forward to many more incredible adventures ahead!DESIREE DUCKETT
