Few places in the world stop you in your tracks like Lake Louise, and a morning at leisure here almost chooses itself; a walk along the lakeshore path, with the château reflected in the water and Victoria Glacier off in the far end of the valley. Even if you've seen the photographs a hundred times, nothing quite prepares you for the real thing. For something active and adventurous, the trail up to the Plain of Six Glaciers teahouse rewards the effort with sweeping views and a well-earned cup of tea (the tea house is only open from mid-June to mid-October, and the hike is only recommended during these months as well due to avalanche risks). In the afternoon, the quieter Lake Agnes trail offers similar drama with a fraction of the crowds. As evening approaches, treat yourself to dinner at one of the Fairmont Lake Louise's elegant dining rooms. The setting of each, framed by mountains and fading alpenglow, is as much a part of the experience as what's on the plate.
