Top 5 Places to Visit on a Family Vacation in the United States

What makes a family-friendly vacation? Places that delight the kids, are easy to navigate, and are safe to boot. Sure, but a vacation with family is also an opportunity to learn about history, culture, and people. The United States is an excellent choice for a family vacation. It's mighty vast, but if you have to limit yourself to a few places, you'll be glad to explore the ones below.

New York

In the vibrant metropolis that is New York, there are numerous attractions and experiences to include in your itinerary. Must-see places include Central Park, the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Statue of Liberty. Embark on a road trip from New York to the idyllic shores of Cape Cod, with its scenic seaside towns and beaches. Or plan a day trip to Coney Island, which is full of kid-pleasing attractions, including Luna Park, New York Aquarium, Nathan's Famous hotdog eatery, and picturesque boardwalks and beaches.

Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. offers several opportunities for fun and interesting family outings. The National Museum of American History, National Building Museum, and Hirshhorn Museum-Sculpture Garden are popular attractions, The Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute is a family favorite. The Butterfly Garden and interactive activities in the Children's Garden at the United States Botanic Garden, and the International Spy Museum will make your American family vacation memorable for the kids.

Philadelphia

Philly is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from New York. The birthplace of cheesesteak and American liberty is a hub of history and culture that will delight everyone. Visit the Philadelphia Orchestra, one of the Big Five American orchestras, climb the famous Rocky steps, and stroll Center City, Philly's cultural, historical, and entertainment hub, where you can glimpse historical monuments like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, take your picture by the LOVE sculpture, and enjoy a nature break at beautiful Rittenhouse Square.

Williamsburg, Virginia

Immerse in the 18th century charm of Colonial Williamsburg and enjoy the exhilarating rides, stunning gardens, and live entertainment at Busch Gardens. A trip to Jamestown, the first permanent and successful settlement by the British in the New World, can encourage the kids to dive deeper into America's history. The Jamestown Settlement is the prime attraction here; it is a living history museum providing immersive experiences through exhibits, films, and outdoor recreations. You can explore the life-size recreations of a 17th century fort and climb aboard a recreation of one of the three ships that sailed from England to Virginia in 1607. At Historic Jamestowne, the actual location of the original colony at Jamestown, you can see artifacts, including coins, armor, and human remains, at the Voorhees Archaearium.

Charlottesville, Virginia

Visit Charlottesville, the former home of Thomas Jefferson. Explore the University of Virginia, visit the Glass Palette, and hop on a bateau boat and cruise down the James River. If you love wine, reserve time for a wine tour. You can also join the popular Downtown Mall Food Tour.

We went on a highly customized comprehensive (though quick tour) of England and a bit of Scotland through Goway. Ingrid Aird did an amazing job of planning and arranging every detail with her deep experience, insight, thoughtfulness and creativity, tuning into the needs of each traveler; and she did so even though our decision to travel was rather spontaneous and last minute! Our family had the best time! We look forward to working with Ingrid and Goway again!Vilja Breiling

I can't tell you enough how much I love to work with Callie. She is a life saver and I love how attentive she is. Every time I give her an itinerary for a client- she really knocks it out of the park with the proposal. If there are any issues- she is on it right away. Her work ethic is outstanding.Michelle Labarca

We were trying to navigate Swiss Travel Center to book a 10 day train trip through Switzerland. It was exactly what we wanted but navigating their site was extremely difficult for us. Goway Travel picked up on our plight and put us in contact with Jacqueline Fagooli, one of their agents. From there on everything was so smooth. Their efficiency, communication, and thoroughness were beyond our expectations. The trip was fabulous and kudos to Jacqueline and Goway for their help in making it so.Carolyn McCormack

The destination specialist I've worked with (Kim Rawlings) has provided exceptional service. She is very knowledgeable of her region and everything they have to offer. She is very prompt in her communication and follow-up. She listens and is very attentive to my client's needs and wants. Kim's personality makes one feel like they've known each other for years. If GoWay had a customer service model, Kim is it.T. Jackson, Tribe Trek Travel
