Ask a random person where the Cook Islands is and they might be able to tell you it’s in the South Pacific, but that is likely all they’ll be able to tell you. It’s too bad as this is one of the most appealing beach destinations in the entire world. To help you learn more about this picturesque island destination and to plan your own beach travels, we chatted with Senior Destination Specialist Alice Teramoto to get her insights on the Cook Islands. Alice has travelled to the islands several times and knows them inside and out.
Which area of the islands is the best place to stay in?
The Muri Lagoon area on Rarotonga is an excellent hub for travellers where you can stay without needing a car to go into town. You can walk to a variety of restaurants as well as the Muri Night Markets from your hotel. You can swim and snorkel right off the beach. The lagoon water is shallow and calm, so it’s very family-friendly and safe.
What’s your favourite resort in the Cook Islands?
Pacific Resort Aitutaki with its individual beachfront villas. This resort resonates with luxury, with huge private terraces from your bedroom and your own private beach area and views and access to the lagoon right in front of your villa. There is definitely a very peaceful atmosphere here and it just feels like it’s very special.
Is there a unique way to tour the Cooks?
You don’t really tour the islands. There are only two major islands that people visit, and you either rent a car or scooter to get around. It takes 40 minutes to travel around Rarotonga. Most of your activities will be on the water, snorkelling or swimming with marine life.
What’s a hidden gem in the Cook Islands that more people should know about?
One Foot Island in Aitutaki Lagoon has stunning white beaches and beautiful blue water. It might be famous in the Cooks, but it remains a hidden gem worldwide.
What’s a cultural activity that people shouldn’t miss?
Visitors should definitely include Te Vara Nui Village, a buffet dinner experience featuring island cuisine and a Polynesian dance show held over the water on a floating stage. It features highly entertaining dancers backed by a talented drumming band. Patrons even get to try a bit of the dancing themselves at the end of the show.
When’s the best time to visit the Cook Islands?
Anytime of the year is great to visit the Cooks, but I recommend avoiding the school holiday season of the Aussies and Kiwis. They have four school terms with about two weeks off at Easter and in July and September or October.
What’s something more travellers should know about the Cook Islands?
There are no high-rise buildings or fancy chain hotels here. In fact, there is a long-standing community and environmental rule mandating no building can be higher than the tallest coconut tree. Most resorts are small and boutique style or self-catering, which offers a great community atmosphere.
What’s a useful tip for people heading to the Cooks?
Free Wi-Fi and high-speed internet are not currently widespread in the resorts here so having your own eSIM plan is a good idea.
What’s the top food or drink in the Cooks that you’d recommend?
Ika mata, which is raw fish marinated in lemon/lime juice and coconut milk. It just melts in your mouth and is absolutely refreshing. In general, you should try any of the seafood in the Cook Islands.
You might say that Aren was destined to become a globetrotter after his family took him to Germany two times before he was four. If that wasn’t enough, a term spent in Sweden as a young teenager and a trek across Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand confirmed that destiny. An independent writer, director, and film critic, Aren has travelled across Africa, Asia, Central America, Europe, the Middle East, and South America. His favourite travel experience was visiting the major cities of Japan’s largest island, Honshu, but his love for food, drink, and film will take him anywhere that boasts great art and culture.
