Vol. 38 of Globetrotting is now arriving in the mailboxes of our tens of thousands of readers in the US and Canada. When the very first issue was printed in Toronto in 2001, in foldable broadsheet format, it had a clear mission to inspire readers to dream about their next vacation.
I’ve had the privilege (and thrill) of serving as Editor-in-Chief for nearly four years, shaping the magazine’s editorial vision and overseeing our stories, art direction, and production. I’ve worked in media for almost twenty years, and I know that a successful magazine cannot stand still or remain complacent. When I first joined in 2023, Globetrotting underwent a major editorial evolution. Today marks another evolution for us, and whether you read us in print or online, you’ll notice that things look a bit different.
I love a good Aha! moment. Ours came when we learned a large share of our Globetrotting readers love to bring their copies with them on their travels. So, a new compact, portable redesign was born. In the print world, this is called “digest size,” which triggered my nostalgia for Reader’s Digest, a magazine that was always within reach in my childhood home. Its compact size always resonated with me: small enough to tuck into a bag, yet full of stories that could transport you anywhere.
Don’t let the smaller size of the new Globetrotting fool you. Inside, we’ve made room for even more stories, told from a wider range of perspectives, and covering more of the world. We’ve packed it with new features, stunning photography, and original illustrations. We’ve also evolved the online experience. With over a thousand articles, we’ve made it easier to navigate, browse, and discover the stories. And as always, whether in print or online, our stories are written by real people, not AI.
The Making of Volume 38
Like every issue, Vol. 38 brought together our teams of editors, writers, designers, photographers, illustrators, proofreaders, and production partners, all working to bring the issue to life. We kick off with pitch meetings, my favourite part. At this stage, anything is possible, and the bigger the ideas, the better. The creative energy in these meetings is amazing, and I’m always impressed and inspired by the ideas that volley around the boardroom. A remarkable amount of travel data and insights inform our editorial lineup, but the real magic is always in the stories and the perspective the team brings back from the road.
With our editorial lineup decided, we get to work on writing and content development. Each story moves through a journey of its own: drafting, editing, fact-checking, and proofreading. We test every story, making sure it feels original, useful, accurate, and true to the idea that first excited us.
Design is a huge part of storytelling too. Vol. 38’s smaller print format meant adapting or reimagining every layout from the start. While copy is flowing in, we’re simultaneously sourcing and commissioning photography, running our own shoots, and designing illustrations. This culminates in a gigantic pagination wall—a draft of every single page in the issue, allowing us to see the entire book together for the first time. We burn through Post-It Notes and drain Sharpies making revisions and edits, watching the issue come to life. The home stretch is sometimes grueling and always rewarding as we scrutinize every detail all the way until the final print deadline. Finally, it’s off to the press.
Our Team in the Wild
The Globetrotting team does not experience the world from behind a desk. The real work happens on the road, where new places, people, and perspectives deepen our understanding of travel and shape the stories we write.
This year alone, our team has travelled to more than 60 countries across all seven continents. Every journey brings back first-hand knowledge: the details that make a destination distinctive, the questions travellers should ask, and the experiences worth seeking out. Those insights inform our pitches, strengthen our editing, and ensure we create stories grounded in genuine experience.
Voices from Award-Winning Travel Writers
Alongside our in-house team, every issue of Globetrotting features carefully selected voices from independent travel writers. We choose contributors for their first-hand travel experience and distinctive perspectives.
Vol. 38 brings together the talents of David Farley, Mira Miller, Sophia Michelen, Erin Donahue, and Jessica Huras, each adding a unique point of view to the issue and broadening the ways our readers can experience the world.
Our Continued Commitment to Exceptional Storytelling
Since 2001, Globetrotting has been driven by the experience of Goway Travel, founded in 1970, and on the collective expertise, curiosity, and passion of people who believe travel stories should be lived before they are told. We care deeply about sharing authentic, human perspectives, which is why our articles, illustrations, and photography are created by people, never generated by AI.
