With a population of 2,155,784, Botswana is a landlocked country bordered by Zambia in the north, Zimbabwe in the east, South Africa to the south and Namibia to the west. Located in the Southern African region, the northern two-thirds of Botswana is situated with the Tropics. The terrain of Botswana is consistently flat throughout the country maintaining an elevation of around 1,000 m above sea level.

Approximately 70% of Botswana is dominated by the Kalahari Desert which is a large, semiarid sandy savannah that covers an area of 900,000 square kilometres (350,000 square miles). The Kalahari Desert is not only limited to Botswana, it also covers parts of Namibia and South Africa. It is not a true desert in that parts of it receive over 250 mm (9.8 in) of rainfall annually and as such, some parts are well vegetated. The only truly arid portion is in the southwest which receives under 175 mm (6.9 in) of rainfall annually. The Kalahari Desert is home to a number of popular game reserves including the second largest protected area in the world, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

The Okavango River flows into the country from the northwest and with no outlet to the sea, it forms a huge wetland covering 16,800 km known as the Okavango Delta in the Kalahari Desert. The Okavango Delta is an oasis in an arid country and serves as a permanent and seasonal home to a wide array of wildlife including African Bush Elephants, African Buffalos and giraffes among many others.
