Mauritius Geography and Maps
Mauritius has situated in the Indian Ocean approximately 800 km (497 mi) off the east coast of Madagascar, situated just above the Tropic of Capricorn, in the south of the Indian Ocean. The Republic of Mauritius consists of five islands, Mauritius, Rodrigues, the two Agalega-Islands, and the Cargados-Carajos Archipelago. Offshore are smaller, uninhabited islands: Coin de Mire, Ile d’Ambre and Ile aux Bénitiers.
Mauritius has a central plateau which is about 400 m above sea level. Mountains are scattered around the island, the highest of which are Piton de la Rivière Noire at 828 m (2,719.53 ft), Pieter Both at 823 m (2,700 ft) and Le Pouce at 812 m (2,664 ft). Forests and plants are other features that add to the natural beauty of the island. More than 145 km (90 mi) of white sandy beaches and the transparent lagoon are protected from the rough open sea by the world’s third largest coral reef which almost surrounds the island. Extinct volcanoes, craters and waterfalls are also located on Mauritius.
