The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven different emirates located in the Middle East, on the Arabian Peninsula. The constituent emirates are Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Quwain. The UAE is bordered by Oman and Saudi Arabia as well as the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. The exact size of the UAE is unknown because of several disputed claims to several islands in the Persian Gulf. Also, many of its land borders remain un-demarcated.

The coastline of the UAE runs for approximately 1,318 km (819 mi) along the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Along the southern shore of the Persian Gulf, many salt pans exist that extend far inland. The majority of the UAE is made up of a flat, rolling desert. Despite being relatively flat, there is the Al Hajar al Gharbi Mountain Chain which splits the country from north to south starting in the northern emirates. Within this range is Jabal Yibir, UAE’s highest point at 1,527 m (5,010 ft).

Two of the most popular emirates are Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Abu Dhabi is the largest emirate, accounting for 87% of the total land area of the UAE. Despite its size, only around 30% of Abu Dhabi is inhabited. There are 200 islands that belong to the emirate, however, they are small and mostly uninhabited. Instead, they are used as wildlife reserves. Dubai lies directly in the Arabian Desert. It hosts sandy desert patterns that differ from the gravel deserts found in the southern part of the country. Both Abu Dhabi and Dubai have used land reclamation projects with Abu Dhabi filling in low-laying salt flats to create Yas Island, Al Reem Island and Lulu Island. Most of Dubai’s reclamation projects have been completed in the past fifteen years and include Palm Islands, World Islands, Dubai Marina and Burk Al Arab.
