Best of Bolivia & Peru

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 3,631

See the highlights of Peru and Bolivia on this great-value combo vacation. Start in Peru, where you’ll venture into the Sacred Valley of the Incas and explore Machu Picchu. Then connect to Bolivia to explore the capital, La Paz, and marvel at the stark flatness of the Uyuni Salt Flats.

This 10-day South American vacation showcases the wonders of Peru and Bolivia, including Machu Picchu and the Uyuni Salt Flats. It features first-class accommodations, independent tours, and is ideal for first-time visitors to South America.

Your Peruvian vacation begins in Cusco, the former Incan capital and one of South America’s historical centres. While you may spend most of your time taking it easy and acclimating to the high altitude, be sure to explore the Plaza Mayor, home to Cusco Cathedral and the Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus. From Cusco, venture into the Sacred Valley of the Incas and get in touch with the traditional peoples that have called it home for millennia. During your full-day tour, you’ll head to Chincero, home to the traditional markets showcasing colourful weaves and crafts, as well as Ollantaytambo, a former Incan town with the ruins of a massive fortress on the hillside.

After exploring the Sacred Valley, hop the train bound for Machu Picchu, the legendary Inca citadel that was constructed in the 14th century and was lost until 1911 when Hiram Bingham introduced it to the western world. You’ll enjoy two visits to Machu Picchu. The first afternoon, hike up the Sun Gate to see the citadel illuminated on the mountaintop, then explore the ruins to see fascinating spots like the Inca’s Home and the Temple of the Condor. The next day, consider climbing Huayna Picchu for rarely-seen views of the ruins. Then spend the rest of your time independently touring the ruins or hire a guide who’ll bring the citadel to life with stories of its past and the heights of the Inca Empire. That afternoon, return by train to Cusco.

Fly into Bolivia and the capital, La Paz, the world’s highest capital, located at the foot of the Andes Mountains. While you could easily occupy yourself with wandering the city at leisure, a full-day tour will showcase the highlights, from Murillo Square to the Witches Market, where you’ll witness uncanny displays of spirituality and commerce. You’ll venture into the Valley of the Moon to gaze upon the fascinating geological formations that give it its name.

Connect to the Uyuni Salt Flats, the world’s largest salt flat and one of the flattest spots on the planet. Explore this magical landscape from the confines of Kachi Lodge, a 4-star, eco-friendly collection of geodesic domes that offer all the comforts of a hotel with direct access to the salt flats. Your time here is your own to explore the salt flats. Venture to the nearby village of Coquesa to see the ancient mummies sheltered in a cave overlooking the village and the flats. Hike to the crater of Tunupa Volcano and gaze out over the stretches of white earth. Bike across the landscape and take advantage of the on-site telescopes in the evening to gaze upon the heavens. If you’re lucky enough to visit after a rainfall, you’ll witness the flats transform into a sea of stars, perfectly reflecting the sky above them.

At the end of your stay, connect back to La Paz and return home.

FD Authentic Sacred Valley Tour SIB

Discover the "authentic" Sacred Valley of the Incas through this exciting day tour. The day begins with a visit to Inca's Balcony, beautifully terraced farm land with impressive views of the nearby weaving town of Chinchero. Having seen Chinchero from afar in its picturesque location within the Sacred Valley, you travel to the town itself. Home to 12 families that maintain the traditions of their forebears the town is now famous for its market and amazing examples of weaving and wools. Your visit will take you into the homes of one of the families and hear you will have a first-hand demonstration of the ancient weaving techniques and the processes of extracting the colorful dies from the produce growing in the region. Photographic opportunities abound as your hosts are dressed in traditional costumes and the indigenous features only add to the authenticity of the town and your visit. From here you travel further down the Sacred Valley to where the main road ends, and the famous fort town of Ollantaytambo is located. Strategically located as a choke point in the valley, the fort and village is a living Incan town with much of the original structure and irrigations systems still in functional use and which has been inhabited since the 13th century..

The town is also the central meeting place for porters being assigned to Inca trails which start from just outside the town as well as the main train station to and from Machu Picchu, so it is always a chaotic mix of locals, and travelers, colors, smells and activity. The fort that sits above the town and the valley. Dominates the region and it is one of very few locations that the Incan forces during the conquest, were able to defeat the Spanish in battle. With its "Andenes" (terraces dug into the slopes of mountains for agricultural use), Ollantaytambo was a highly effective fortress, that also served as a temple.

Standing directly on the Uyuni Salt Flats,at an altitude of 3'600 m, at the foot of Tunupa Volcano, our luxury domes lodge is waiting for you. From a distance, the white pods look like a space station designed by Buckminsterfuller. The dome camp also has something of an observatory, or a folly built for a passionate astrophysicist! Day 8

Kachi Lodge Uyuni Salt Flats

Choose from one of the included activities.

There are many options to make the best out of your experience
on the Salt Flats.

The one not to be missed is a hike in the morning to nearby island covered with giant cactus and offering amazing views on the Salt Flat. We usually prefer to avoid the Island of Inca Huasi, the most famous but very, very heavily trafficked.

An afternoon option is a visit to the charming village of Coquesa and its mummies sheltered in a cave 600mts / 2000ft over the village, again with beautiful views on the Salt Flats.

At about an hour drive away lies the interesting archaeological site of Alcaya, an old pre-colombian city near Salinas.

Enjoy an active hike to the lower lip of Tunupa volcano crater. (+/- 2 hrs)

Staying more "local" you can also borrow one of the mountain bikes and experience the flatness of the Salar around the camp.

At night, a telescope is at your disposal to observe the starry night of the Altiplano.

During the wet season, when the level of water allows it, enjoy a stand up paddle ride on the flooded Salar.
