Highlights of Rio de Janeiro Iguassu Falls & Buenos Aires

Duration
11 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,400

FIRST-CLASS | PRIVATE-GUIDED: On this private-guided adventure, discover a classic South American route that all globetrotters should experience at least once. Combining the rhythms and culture of Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires alongside two nights in spectacular Iguassu Falls, it is a quintessential exploration of three iconic destinations.

This 11-day trip combines two of the world’s great cities in Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, linking them with a visit to Iguassu Falls, arguably the world’s most impressive waterfalls.

Few cities stir the emotions like Rio de Janeiro. The world capital of samba brings together beaches, hopping nightlife, a rich history, and jaw-dropping views that see it dubbed ‘The Marvelous City.’ A city tour takes you through the downtown, where you’ll see the famous Sambadrome, the Metropolitan Cathedral, storied Cinelandia with its many grand theatres, and the National Museum of Fine Arts. A highlight is undoubtedly the Corcorvado, where Christ the Redeemer gazes out over the city. Take the historic cog railway to the summit and snap a photo (arms outstretched or not, it’s entirely up to you). The following day, visit Rio’s other great view, from Sugar Loaf Mountain, reached via one of the world’s first cable car systems. Of course, Rio is a huge city with lots to explore, so you’ll have a full day at leisure to relax, enjoy the beaches, or head into historic neighbourhoods like Santa Teresa and Lapa.

Fly on to Iguassu Falls and spend half a day exploring the Brazilian side. Up to 275 cascades make up Iguassu Falls depending on the season, sending up to 450,000 cubic feet of water over the precipice every second in the wet season. The Brazilian side offers fewer walking tracks, but gives you the most spectacular ‘first impression’ as you look across the gorge at the many falls that make up the Argentinean side. This includes the mighty Devil’s Throat, where several branches of the river crash together 70 metres below the edge. The following day, you’ll go in for an even closer look, from the safety of a viewing platform just above the ‘Throat.’ This is one of a number of walks you can take that show off the beauty of the surrounding jungle, as well as some great close views that are inaccessible from the Brazilian side.

Your next stop is Buenos Aires, a name just as evocative as Rio, though for entirely its own reasons. This is a city ofneighbourhoods, as you’ll discover on a half day tour that begins at the Plaza de Mayo, overlooked by the Casa Rosada and the Metropolitan Cathedral. You’ll see the Colon Theatre, and the famousneighbourhoods of San Telmo andcolourful La Boca (touristy, but fun!). The tour then continues to the posher side of town, taking you through Palermo and Recoleta, including the famous cemetery where Eva Peron and many other local legends are interred. In the evening, return to San Telmo for a spellbinding tango show over dinner. As in Rio, there’s much to discover in Buenos Aires beyond the tourist sights, so take two full days at leisure to explore before flying home.

Half Day Corcovado

Today, after breakfast, you will explore Rio, Corcovado; just a few of Rio's many world famous sites.

You begin with a drive through downtown Rio, passing by the Sambodrome, the Metropolitan Cathedral, visit the traditional Cinelandia Square with its many historical buildings, the Municipal Theatre, the National Library and the National Museum of Fine Arts.

From one stunning view to another it is now onto Corcovado to stand at the feet of the immense statue of Christ towering above the city of Rio with open arms.

After taking a cog railway to the summit, it is a short walk through the many stalls selling all incarnations of the statue of Christ where you come face to feet with one of the country's and world's most recognizable sites - the Statue of Christ the Redeemer.

From one hand to the other, the statue measures almost 30mts / 98ft. Since it was placed atop the 700mts / 2300ft peak of Corcovado Mountain in 1931, this figure has been one of the most famous symbols of Rio. It weighs 700 tons and is visible night and day from most of the city's neighbourhoods. With stunning views all over Rio it is a photo opportunity not to be missed and never forgotten. Half Day Brazilian Falls Only ex Iguassu Falls Brazil Hotels

Taller than Niagara Falls, twice as wide with 275 cascades spread in a horseshoe shape over nearly two miles of the Iguassu River, Iguassu Falls are the result of a volcanic eruption which left yet another large crack in the earth. During the rainy season of November - March, the rate of flow of water going over the falls may reach 450,000 cubic feet (12,750-metres cubed) per second.

These matter of fact details do nothing to describe the grandeur of the falls, the tremendous amount of water (an average of 553 cubic feet per second) thundering down 269 feet, the tropical location and the sheer beauty that led Eleanor Roosevelt to say, "Poor Niagara." Four times the width of Niagara Falls, Iguassu Falls are divided by various islands into separate waterfalls.

Today is spent on the Brazilian side of the falls. The optional Macuco Safari and or the helicopter ride above the falls - available ONLY on the Brazilian side of the falls - are highly recommended (own expense).

Day 6

Full Day Argentinian Falls with Devils Throat ex Iguassu Falls Brazil Hotels finishes in Argentina

The tour begins at the Visitor Center where you board the train at Central Station, some 400 metres away from the main gate. The train travels along Sendero Verde (Green Trail) finishing at Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) Station, the starting point of your journey. You will walk via the catwalks out and over the river, finally reaching Devil's Throat, the apex of the mighty Iguassu Falls.

It is a 70-metre-deep point where several branches of the Iguassu river converge, causing a violent but spectacular sight.

You will return to the station and re board the train to the Visitor Centre, and then to the start of the Upper Trail Walk. The Upper Circuit is a half-hour walk along a 1200- metre trail, with a low degree of difficulty and no stairs, which takes you deep into the jungle and over the precipice of the many falls on the Argentinean side.
