Wonders of Peru

Duration
7 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,026

Experience the charms and history of Cusco, the former capital of the Inca empire on this Peru vacation. Of course, you'll also visit incredible Machu Picchu site.

On arrival in Peru, spend overnight in Lima before flying to Cusco, the once capital of the Inca civilization and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This will be your base for the next 3 nights. Start with a tour of Cusco and discover the delights of this city with its well preserved Spanish Colonial architecture. Some of the major highlights are the Plaza de Armas, the main square with its lively atmosphere and churches, shops and restaurants, the Koricancha Palace, the most important temple of the Incas and the imposing Church of La Compania de Jesus built by the Jesuits in 1571. Later, continue to the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Sacsayhuaman Fortress, the site of the battle in 1536 between the Spanish and the Incas. At sunset, enjoy some sparkling wine and small snacks at the site.

The next morning, travel overland from Cusco to Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, the heartland of the Inca civilization. Here you will board the Vistadome train on the journey through the valley to Machu Picchu. The train is surrounded entirely by glass and the carriages have large panoramic windows offering incomparable scenic views and numerous opportunities to capture amazing pictures of the surrounding Andean Mountains. Arrive at Aguas Caliente 6 kilometers/3.5 miles from the Machu Picchu site. Machu Picchu was an Inca citadel consisting of a complex of palaces, plazas, temples and homes. Although it was originally built in the 15th Century, it was not discovered by Westerners until 1911, hence it is known as "The Lost City of the Incas". It is interestingly built in astronomical alignments. Return by train to Ollantaytambo and then back to Cusco.

Stay overnight in Lima and then transfer to the airport for departure to your next destination.

Day 4

Sacred Valley of the Incas

A full day excursion to the Chincheros and Ollantaytambo. With an early start, you drive through the fertile countryside of the Urubamba Valley to the colonial village of Chincheros. This traditional Andean town is known as 'the birthplace of the rainbow', and it has the full complement of photogenic attractions: Inca ruins, Andean village houses, an elaborate colonial church built on Inca foundations, and of course the lively weekly market. Please note: The main market day is Sunday. Other days the market is open but much smaller in scale.

Continuing down the valley and ever so slightly lower in altitude you head to the impressive archaeological complex of Ollantaytambo. Ollantaytambo is a massive citadel located 50 kilometers from Machu Picchu. The citadel served as both a temple and a fortress and the only battle at which the Incas held off the Spanish. You will then be transferred to your hotel.
