Overview

Take a trip to Serengeti National Park on your Tanzania Vacation

Located to the north of the country, sharing an international border with Kenya is the country's oldest and most popular national park, the world-famous Serengeti to be experienced on a Tanzania safari.

Covering an area of 14,763 square kilometres (5,700 square miles) of grassland plains, savanna land as well as riverine forest and woodlands, the Maasai, the traditional inhabitants of the Serengeti, call it Siringitu, “the place where the land moves on forever”. The Maasai people had been grazing cattle in the area for over two hundred years before Europeans arrived. As the number of foreign visitors intensified, so too did the hunting of large game. As a result, the British designated a small game reserve in 1921 which became the basis for the Serengeti National Park which opened in 1951.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Serengeti is known for its abundance of wildlife including the “Big Five” (African elephant, lion, Cape buffalo, rhino and leopard) as well as cheetahs, gazelles, giraffes and zebras among others on a Tanzania safari. The Serengeti is most famous for the Great Migration, a natural phenomenon that sees approximately 1,300,000 wildebeest, 500,000 Thomson’s gazelles, 200,000 zebras, 97,000 topi and 18,000 elands migrate north to Kenya each July. By November the animals move south arriving back in the Serengeti in December. Even when the migration is quiet, Serengeti National Park provides excellent game viewing making it the flagship of Tanzania’s tourism industry.

Ngorongoro and Serengeti National Park are simply spectacular. There’s no place quite like the massive crater or the migration-covered plains.
