Overview

Take a trip to Great Ocean Road on your Australia Vacation

By taking the scenic drive along the Great Ocean Road on your Australia vacation, you will discover a diverse and dramatic region located along the southeast coast of Victoria from Geelong to Portland. It is an Australian National Heritage built by soldiers between 1919 and 1932 and dedicated as a war memorial to the casualties of World War 1.

Travelling through varying terrain hugging the coast, you will have a winding ride through nature with wonderful views of this wild and windswept 243-kilometre/151-mile long highway.
Some of the attractions are surf beaches, historic ports, whale lookouts, mountain ranges, rainforests and national parks. There is an abundance of wildlife which includes kangaroos, emus, koalas, water birds, fur seals and dolphins.

Some of the highlights to watch for are along Shipwreck Coast, a 130-kilometre/80-mile rugged stretch of the road so called because of the hundreds of ships that have floundered here. They include the renowned 12 Apostles, the limestone pillars that rise out of the ocean carved over time by the waves and stand up to 45 metres/145 feet high and The Grotto where one can walk down the cliff face to view it.

On trips to Australia, one can visit Otway National Park and cruise through gorges, tree top walk on ancient mossy trees, get close to old volcanoes and once again experience the rugged coastline.

Sydney and Melbourne are a great combination for first-time visitors to Australia, with Brisbane, Adelaide and/or the Outback added in, depending on how much time you have. Returnees should take in Perth, Darwin and the Kakadu National Park area and/or Tasmania if they can, plus spend some time in the cities they loved the first time around
