Lisbon spreads across steep hillsides that overlook the River Tagus. It is made up of tree-lined avenues, green parks, old and new neighbourhoods and narrow inviting streets. The city is located on the Atlantic coast. Lisbon is recognized as a global city because of its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education and tourism. It is one of the oldest cities in the world and the oldest in Western Europe predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. Lisbon enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Among all the cities in Europe, it has the warmest winters to be enjoyed on a Portugal vacation.

The heart of the city is the Baixa or City Centre. The Pombaline Baixa is an elegant district, primarily constructed after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. In the city centre, the vast Praca do Comercio (Commerce Square) is an imposing landmark. Lisbon's main street, the Avenida da Liberdade is a broad leafy boulevard with upmarket shops, terminating at the circular Praca de Marques de Pombal. Nearby are the older neighbourhoods, Alfama and Mouraria, both retaining their charm with their winding alleys and azulejo-covered crumbling buildings that abound.

Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon. It spreads down the southern slope from the Castle of Sao Jorge to the River Tagus. Its name, derived from the Arabic Al-hamma, means fountains or baths. During the Islamic invasion of Iberia, the Alfama constituted the largest part of the city. It became inhabited by fishermen and the poor and is made up of a labyrinth of narrow streets and small squares. It is a historical quarter occupied by Fado bars, restaurants, and homes with small shops downstairs. The Castle of Sao Jorge is a Moorish castle occupying a commanding hilltop overlooking the historic centre of Lisbon and the River Tagus. The strongly fortified citadel dates from the medieval period of Portuguese history and is one of the main tourist sites of Lisbon while on a Portugal tour.

Mouraria is where the Moors were allowed to live after the Christian conquest of Lisbon in 1147, before being expelled together with the Jews three Centuries later. It is a very authentic Lisbon neighborhood, known as the birthplace of Fado. It had become a very rundown neighborhood, but major renovations have brought it back to life. Martim Moniz Square here serves food from all over the world,

The hilltop district of Bairro Alto is a neighbourhood with many restaurants and bars which line the narrow streets. Bairro Alto literally means the upper quarter and is the centre of the Portuguese capital's nightlife. The older homes here date from the 16th and 17th Centuries.

Alcantara is a suburb of Lisbon with a long history. In the 16th Century, there was a stream here on which the nobles used to promenade in their boats. During the late 19th century, Alcantara became a popular industrial area. Archaeological findings have given rise to human presence in the area from the Bronze Age. The Romans also left their mark with the remnants of villas, camps and bridges still remaining such as the Alcantara Bridge and Viaduct. There are also several old convents which still exist and can be visited on a Portugal vacation.

Belem is famous as the place from which many of the great Portuguese explorers set off on their voyages of discovery. It is also home to the former royal residence, the 17th Century Belem Palace now occupied by the President of Portugal. Perhaps Belem's most famous feature is its tower, the Torre de Belem which was built as a fortified lighthouse late in the 16th Century to guard the entrance to the port.

Some cultural venues of note are the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga with its impressive national art collection including 14th-19th century European paintings, the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum with its assortment of Egyptian artifacts along with paintings by great masters such as Rembrandt, Manet, Monet, and Renoir and the Museu do Azulejo (Tile Museum), one of the most important national museums with its collection of tiles. Lisbon has a number of other cultural institutes well worth visiting on Portugal trips.
