Take a trip to Cairo on your Egypt Vacation
Located in northern Egypt along the Nile River is Cairo, nicknamed “the mother of all cities” by Egyptians. This historic city serves as Egypt’s capital and is also Africa’s largest city offering lots of opportunities on an Egypt tour.
The original capital of Ancient Egypt was Memphis, located southwest of Cairo and founded in 2,000 BC by King Menes who united Upper and Lower Egypt. Present day Cairo was established almost 3,000 years later in 969 AD. Since its inception, Cairo has been ruled by Persians, Pharaohs, Romans, Arabian caliphs, British colonials and more. After the Second World War, the development of this fascinating city has been intense resulting in a large and fast growing population.
Cairo is a truly world famous city home to some of the world’s most famous sites to be enjoyed on Egypt tours. Here tourists on Cairo tours can visit the Pyramids of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that dates back to 2,584 BC and the Great Sphinx, who guards this site and is the largest monolith statue in existence. The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities is also popular, hosting more than 120,000 artefacts that span the country’s history from its earliest times.
While firmly respecting and celebrating its incredible past on trips to Egypt, Cairo also offers a modern and vibrant society that continues to attract many international visitors each year.
