Overview

Take a trip to Macau on your China Vacation

Macau is located on the western side of the Pearl River Delta only 60 kilometres/38 miles from Hong Kong to the east easily reached by ferry or hydrofoil. To the north of Macau is the Chinese province of Guangdong. It has been a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China since 1999. Before that, it was a Portuguese colony. Geographically, it consists of 3 areas, Macau Peninsula and the islands of Taipa and Coloane and is the most densely populated region in the world. The official languages are Cantonese and Portuguese. The cuisine, architecture and character of the place are a distinct mixture of Cantonese and Portuguese, all to be experienced on a Macau tour.

Macau is well known as a gambling centre and is actually the largest in the world with 33 casinos a total of which 23 are on the Macau Peninsula. Obviously, this is the greatest form of income for Macau as well as tourism.

The biggest event in the destination’s calendar is the Macau Grand Prix which takes place every November. Some of the other highlights to be considered on a Macau vacation include the following. The Ruins of St. Paul’s, a cathedral that burnt down several times and was not rebuilt after the last fire in 1835, is a major landmark in the city. Hovering over the city is the Macau Tower, 225 metres/730 feet high. One can Bungee Jump, climb the tower or simply take in the amazing views in the Observation Lounge. The Jardim Municipal de Montanha Russa is a serene park located high on a hill with an interesting botanical collection. An interesting area is Fisherman’s Wharf with its shops, restaurants and theme park. Then there is the imposing Mandarin House which was built in 1869 and boasts 60 rooms in total. For animal lovers, the Giant Panda Pavillion in Coloane will appeal with its 2 pandas.

This combination of European and Chinese influences makes Macau a very worthwhile destination to spend time in.

It is very enjoyable to travel in China by high-speed train, but you should avoid travelling during the National Holidays from October 1 to 7 and from May 1 to 4, as they get extra busy.

Jinxian Road in Shanghai is a small road but full of superb, Michelin-recognized restaurants. I highly recommend visiting here on your travels to China.

China's many beautiful natural sights and rich cultural areas are what I love most about visiting. Some of my personal favourites are Yunnan's Shangri-La, Xinjiang, Zhangjiajie, and the 5 Great Mountains.
