Overview

Take a trip to Denpasar Bali on your Indonesia Vacation

Denpasar is the largest city and capital of the island of Bali. Located on the south side of the island, Denpasar has been the focus of much of the island’s growth and wealth.

Once the capital of the kingdom of Badung, Denpasar was conquered by the Dutch in 1906, during the Dutch Intervention in Bali. With the royal palace looted and razed, a statue of the Puputan, a Balinese term referring to mass ritual suicide, stands in the now central square in the heart of town.

Various other monuments are found, dedicated to the Balinese struggle with the Dutch, as are temples, palaces, and museums.

Bali Museum, originally opened in 1910, features both ancient and modern Balinese artifacts. Brought down in 1917 by an earthquake, German artist Walter Spies sparked a major revival in 1932.

Denpasar is known for its various white sandy beaches. While Kuta, Legian, and Canggu Beaches offer surfing, Sanur Beach, with its calmer waters, is ideal for sunbathing.

The Kuta district is a tourist hub, filled with hotels, cafes, restaurants, malls, and spas. Handicrafts such as artwork, pottery, textiles, and silver are found in local shops, while batik cloth can be seen being sold everywhere.

Ubud is all about jungle, rice terraces, and spirituality—no beaches here. Munduk’s cooler climate and coffee plantations, meanwhile, offer a peaceful escape, while the Bali Swing remains a favourite for photos.
