Culture Compliments of Korea

Just across the Sea of Japan, South Korea has emerged as a cultural powerhouse in recent decades, not unlike Japan did in the 90s and 00s. While there are some other cultural parallels with Japan, Korea is an altogether different experience. Touch down in Seoul, and you’ll find an ever-evolving city bringing Korean language, culture and sensibility to the world. Of course, food has been a popular Korean export for many years, and from bibimbap spiced with tasty kimchi to succulent barbecue enjoyed over rounds of soju, it doesn’t disappoint.

Spend a day diving into Korean history at Seoul’s incredible palaces, and another exploring the vibrant capital through its food, pop culture and contemporary museums. Be sure to visit the enigmatic Korean Demilitarized Zone, where you can glimpse the world’s most reclusive nation, North Korea, and learn more about its delicate relationship with the gregarious South.

Want to extend your trip? Hit the beaches of Busan, Korea’s favourite seaside resort town, or visit Jeju island, the volcanic island to the south, best known for the verdant slopes of Mt Hella and Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak.

Hong Kong Reaches for Asia’s Skies

Hong Kong stands apart from the rest of Asia with its long history as a crossroads between the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and the West. It also happens to be the world’s skyscraper capital, a superlative it loves to show off each night as the Symphony of Lights brings Hong Kong Harbour to life. During the day, zip to the top of Victoria Peak on its famous tram for unbeatable views over the Harbour and Kowloon, then dive into an urban explorer’s dream as you weave your way through shops, temples, and parks that hum with Hong Kong’s unique energy.

Hong Kong is also a legendary foodie destination, rivalling Tokyo and Osaka for culinary delights from across the region. When someone says there’s no ingredient that chefs in Hong Kong can’t turn into something delicious, they may not be joking. From mouth-watering dim sum to endless varieties of noodle dishes, succulent seafood, barbecue, and even sweets, Hong Kong does it all on its own terms, which has made the city a powerhouse destination for chefs from around the world.

Relax in the Land of Smiles

If you’re looking to round out your trip to energetic Japan with a contrast, consider hitting the beaches of Phuket, an ideal spot to disconnect from modernity in beautiful surroundings while enjoying the best aspects of Thai culture and hospitality.

If you’re not feeling the beach vibe, you can always continue the big city adventures in Bangkok, or seek out the quieter delights of Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand, where hill tribes preserve ways of life dating back centuries.

Take an already epic adventure further when you pair your Japan vacation with one, two or more incredible Asia destinations.

You should try a Zen meditation session. Imagine slipping into a silk kimono for the day—carefully tied by an expert dresser, every fold precise, every colour chosen to suit the season. It’s a ritual that feels as personal as it is timeless.

What do I love about Japan? In a word - EVERYTHING. The incredible contrast that Japan offers - new/innovative vs old/traditional, the warm and welcoming people, the incredible rich culture, the culinary wonders awaiting around every corner, the cleanliness, efficiency and safety. It's one of the best places to visit in Asia in my opinion.

Every season offers something to fall in love with, but autumn feels especially magical—fewer tourists, crisp weather, and foliage that rivals the famous blossoms.
