Koh Samui is an island in the province of Surat Thani, situated in the Gulf of Thailand. Located 700 km south of Bangkok, the island is 80kms from the eastern coastline of South Thailand.
With an area of 229 sq km, Koh Samui is Thailand’s third largest island. The island’s centre features an uninhabitable mountain, Khao Pom, which peaks at 635m, while a 51 km road encircles most of the island. Koh Samui’s old capital, Nathon, located on the northwest coast, is the island’s commercial hub and features a major port for fishing and transportation.
Believed to have been inhabited 15 centuries ago by fishermen from the Malay Peninsula and Southern China, Koh Samui grew into an isolated, self-sufficient community. Eventually, tourism prevailed as the island’s main industry, alongside the export of coconuts and rubber.
Consistently expanding with the development of hotels and restaurants, Koh Samui’s primary beaches such as Lamai Beach, Chaweng Beach, and Bophut (Fisherman’s Village), are now considered small towns of their own on trips to Thailand.
Surrounding Koh Samui is 60 smaller islands, all part of Ang Thong Marine National Park and feature ideal places for diving, snorkeling, as well as other water sports, made mostly accessible from Chewang Beach.
Koh Samui is now the second largest resort industry in Thailand after Bangkok. Everything was wonderful. Everything went smoothly. The individual tours were wonderful and all the guides were exceptional. A lot of traveling-the flight was very good on Cathay Pacific would highly recommend their airline seats were comfortable and spaced well. Being on an airplane for 16 hours sucks in general, but other than being a little sore from being stuck in one place all was good.
