Overview

Take a trip to Snowy Mountains on your Australia vacation.

The Snowy Mountains known to locals as “The Snowies”, is Australia’s premier ski resort area and home to spectacular mountain peaks in the south of New South Wales. The mountains span from Canberra to the south across Monaro Park and are best viewed in a self-drive car on Australian vacations.

Kosciuszko National Park contains the country’s highest peak, Mt. Kosciuszko 2230 metres/7250 feet high. On top of the summit, visitors will find the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with 20 rare species of plants found only here. The park has stunning limestone caves, woodlands, glacial lakes and diverse landscapes.

On trips to Australia, the Snowies can be enjoyed all year round from skiing or snowboarding on the highest slopes at Charlotte Pass during winter to hiking the fields and seeing alpine buttercups, billy buttons and wildflowers in the summer. Other activities include bushwalking, hiking, climbing, caving, fishing and horseback riding.

One can explore using a segway at Lake Crackenback Resort and experience being 1200 metres/3900 feet above sea level while enjoying amazing views. Another highlight is the Yarrongobilly Caves which are surrounded by awe-inspiring landscapes.

Sydney and Melbourne are a great combination for first-time visitors to Australia, with Brisbane, Adelaide and/or the Outback added in, depending on how much time you have. Returnees should take in Perth, Darwin and the Kakadu National Park area and/or Tasmania if they can, plus spend some time in the cities they loved the first time around
